Focal point seizure advice

Ogello · 15/10/2025 20:59

My DD had a focal point seizure last week, no illness or temp, nothing unusual such as late night or stress and no seizure since (thankfully) it happened when she had been asleep for about 40mins.
Affected arm and head seemingly (I wasn’t sure what was happening at first so couldn’t take it all in)
Have had an appt with consultant today who’s ordered an MRI & EEG.

Just wanted some advice and tips for anyone who’s child or relative has been through similar as I have no experience at all.
I’m too scared to google!

Also any recommendations for a monitor, my house is a weird layout so her room isn’t near mine.
Should have said too that she’s 10 years old

My daughter has nocturnal focal seizures that started when she was about 11. I did sleep in with her for a while to monitor them and as they progressed they generalised into Tonic clonic seizures. So I would be aware at what you might have to do if that happens. We don’t use an alarm at the moment but young epilepsy will have some information. We use a whoop at night now to monitor her heart rate as we know that goes up with seizures . Luckily after 2-3 years of trying meds we have found a couple that help. It’s very hard to witness your child having a seizure and the unpredictability of it. So please find a support network asap, there are some on Facebook.

Thank you, will have a look for some support groups.
I’ve setup her bed next to mine since it happened but realistically she can’t stay there forever.

Sorry to hear about your daughters seizures progressing.
Can you remember how long between the first and subsequent seizures?

Hers progressed over years and had probably been happening before we noticed it. When we really began to notice it was every 3-4 days and then progressed over the course of a year to most nights . She was also having some small ones in the day that she didn’t realise were seizures.

Thank you, my daughter has only had the one at the moment but I’m worried that she may have had more whilst asleep and not realised, she often wakes in the night and comes down into my bed because she’s had a nightmare
