My 4 month old little girl has been ‘poorly’ for a few days now. I assumed it was teething but noticed a few things that didn’t seem like teething symptoms. I still believe she is teething but when I realised these symptoms I thought it must be something else also. She’s had a cough, sounded croaky when talking, sounded wheezy and her stools had changed to a watery consistency. We phoned 111 for some advice and they booked her an appointment at the hospital she was diagnosed with croup and was giving an oral steroid medicine. I’m assuming she’s maybe caught it from her dad as we are very careful and limit who she is around but my partner has had cold symptoms this week.
I’ve been told cold air is good for croup so we are currently lying in bed with the fan on. I’m just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to handle it at home?
im a first time mam and have major health anxiety so this is really freaking me out 😂

The steroid dose should sort it. It’s really easy to catch unfortunately. If you’re concerned about how she is tomorrow book a GP appointment they should see her tomorrow as she’s so young.
I’ve got one who’s had croup really mildly and one who’s had two trips to A&E in an ambulance with croup

its usually worse at night especially if the house has had the heating on. Often getting outside in the cold air does really help even opening the window. Once you've had steroids it usually gets better within 48hrs but do watch out for the red flags on the nhs site posted above

The steroids usually work really well, but obviously go back if she's struggling to breathe - which you can readily see in babies.

Hang in there. Croup can be scary especially in a little baby. Well done for getting the treatment. Hopefully they’ll be feeling a lot better soon.

My 6 year old had croup 3/4 times a year until about 6 months ago. We were given 2 doses of the steroids to keep at home, it was usually manageable at home but we had a couple of hospital trips when I was worried.
With the cold air you need to get outside or at least be near an open window, rather than a fan. Warm drinks, sleeping upright/propped up, heating off as much as possible and distraction like watching tv are my tips.
Some children are more prone to it than others no matter what you do unfortunately, my other 2 DC have never had it. I found my DD always had a really chesty cough for a couple of days after the dose of steroids and then was fine. It also seems worse at night, I guess because they’re inside and laying down.

Myy little ones used to get croup. I was told by a GP that it’s not a seperate thing that they catch but more of a side effect of other respiratory infections. Larynx is still floppy at that age but over time the rings in it harden up which is why dc grow out of it. Steroids did help a lot, cold air.
