Hear me out. My child getting red patches hives just small one and itchy. Watery eyes and painful eyes etc he looks like he is reacting to something. He also getting acid. Not sure what’s causing this reaction. The only thing I can thing of is ready brek oat and it is fortified. Can my child have mfthr mutation and not able to digest folic acid and it’s it building in his body. He has sugar bag between his eyes and I read that can be sign of MFTHR mutation, and these groups cannot digest folic acid and it just build up.

yes took him to the gp and we waiting for peas and ENT referral but I just want to see if anyone had same experience

Did the NHS diagnose that mutation?

No just my theory so far because I cannot find any other cause. I did elmination diet for egg and diary and didn’t make a difference but oat he have everyday and it just clicked and maybe just maybe it’s the root cause 😭
gp puzzled too and he only done referrals and Asked him to be out on PPI

Have you tried making him regualr porridge than than a processed version?

jetlag92 · 09/10/2025 22:32

It could just be a dust mite allergy. Have you tried just giving an antihistamine?

cestlavielife · 09/10/2025 22:34

Stop the ready brek see what happens

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 09/10/2025 22:35

Just stop feeding him ready brek…

Thevegetarianchef · 10/10/2025 06:53

Online it says ready brek isn't gluten free due to manufacturing processes.
That would be my instinct.

watchingplanesicantafford · 10/10/2025 06:56

Assuming that a referral will probably take a while, if you suspect Ready Brek might be causing an issue, why not stop it and see? Have you tried antihistamines for the allergy symptoms?

Shineonyoucrazy · 10/10/2025 07:00

@WinterscomingbrrrReady Brek is just oats and added minerals and vitamins. OP says he has oats every day, so they aren’t the problem. Potentially the added nutrients (used to fortify all breakfast cereals in the UK) are. I think the whiff of censoriousness in your post is misplaced.

Readybrek contains gluten and OP is likely making it with dairy.

Sounds exactly like an allergic reaction. Readybrek (like all oats unless guaranteed gluten free) can be contaminated with wheat.

You could try making porridge with GF oats instead.

Dodgethis · 10/10/2025 07:12

Also - Take photos and videos whenever it happens.

BusWankers · 10/10/2025 07:13

... So stop the porridge and see... ?

JetFlight · 10/10/2025 08:42

switch to gluten free rice cereal and see if it makes a difference. Does he always have those hives and rashes or do they come and go?

OtterMummy2024 · 10/10/2025 10:36

Rice or corn based instant porridge or cereal is a good suggestion @JetFlight

Tdcp · 10/10/2025 10:43

It's more likely an oat / dairy or gluten allergy than a rare mutation. I'd start there.
