7 year old - Constant burping/Tummy Ache

Hi All,

My 7yo DS has periods of constant burping which is generally followed by stomach pains. This has been going on for around a year now. He has ASD so finds it difficult to verbalise how he his feeling but I can see that it is making him feel unwell. I have been to the GP numerous times with him, they have felt his stomach, taken bloods and a stool sample - all fine other than eosinophils being slightly raised which they put down to his Asthma. We were also referred to the Pediatrician but she thought it may be habitual and discharged us. The GP recently gave him a course of Omeprazole which possibly helped slightly with the stomach pain but not the burping. We have now finished the course and are still in the same position. I have just had a call from his class teacher to tell me he had said he felt unwell, did a massive burp and now seems a little better but they will keep an eye on him.

Sorry for rambling, I just don't how to help him, what do I do next. He is clearly struggling but I can't seem to get any answers - Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I have no idea how this might present in childhood, but burping (particularly sulph.urous) can be a sign of lactose intolerance. I don't think there is any test for this, but you can buy lactose free milk, cheese and butter. I find that they work well for me. I only worked out.i was lactose intolerant in adulthood once I was diagnosed coeliac. I was still unwell after cutting out gluten and found I needed to cut lactose too. Possibly another avenue to investigate? I hope.you get some answers.

Thank you. This is definitely worth a try. Even if it's not lactose intolerance, it's one more thing I can cross off of the list. Can I ask, how long did it take from cutting out lactose to you noticing a difference?

Probably about 10 days from memory

I had been trying to help my dodgy stomach with mashed potatoes and macaroni cheese, so I must have been very full of lactose!
