Baby eczema 😢

MummyToOliverXX · 01/10/2025 20:57

hi everyone x
please does anyone have any creams & bath products or any other recommendations for baby eczema. It’s making me so sad to see his face like this - numerous times we have been to the doctors , about 5-6 different creams and it just seems to get worse and worse. I really don’t know what to do 😓
thank you x

Aw it's so sad isn't it. You've probably already been given epaderm and a steroid cream? We found these did the trick. Used epaderm in the bath too. I also like the aveeno dermexa range. Have you tried changing washing detergent?

Also is it teething related maybe?

It really is so sad 😞 It’s been going on for ages , way before he was teething 😓 I have tried numerous different steroid creams from the doctor they just seem to make it worse if anything. I use aveeno oat cream , it helps to an extent but doesn’t clear it X

Are you sure they are steroid creams and not simply an emollient?

Mushroo · 01/10/2025 21:50

You need to push for a stronger steroid. It’s better to use a stronger one for a short period of time to clear it. Hydrocortisone did absolutely nothing for us, but the ‘next one up’ was miraculous.

We’ve since changed to protopic which suppresses the skin response and use that a few times a week.

Stop using oat creams. There’s a theory now that the reason eczema babies are more prone to allergies is because they’re exposed to food proteins through the skin, rather than via the gut.

So don’t use anything food based on the skin until they’ve regularly eaten it, and get all the allergens (nuts, dairy, eggs, wheat) in the diet from 4 months. See the guidance here:

Are you anywhere near London? Could you afford a private appointment, even just an initial consultation? If so I would highly recommend Dr Helen Cox, two appointments totally sorted our DS severe eczema. GP absolutely useless, refused to refer us. He had such sore skin and would wake with sheets covered in blood from scratching all night. She was amazing, gave us a strict regime of creams to follow and did allergy testing, and it cleared up in a few weeks. This was several years ago but I have never forgotten how much she helped us when we didn’t know what to do.

I’ve had several different steroid creams , they don’t really seem to help anymore 😩

Kit and Kin magic balm is worth a try. My DD (adult) had a stubborn patch of eczema on her face. She saw the Pharmacist then her GP and had steroids and other creams but nothing worked.
I bought her this and it cleared up quickly. Reviews are really good.

Is it just on his cheeks? If it is I would also suggest trying a different shape of dummy. It could be irritation from the dummy or from his own saliva making it worse look at where the edges of the dummy sit v’s the patches. (zero judgement on the dummy btw - amazing things!)

Oh bless you, I completely understand.my little one had really bad eczema too and we went through what felt like every GP cream under the sun. It’s honestly heartbreaking seeing their tiny faces so sore and nothing seems to help. What finally made a difference for us was keeping baths short and just using lukewarm water with a bit of emollient or oat soak, then moisturising straight after while the skin’s still slightly damp. I also switched to soft cotton clothes, kept the room cool at night, and avoided fragranced detergents or softener that helped calm things a bit.
The real turning point though was when I tried the happy skin sleepsuit along with their recovery cream (it’s paraffin-free and really gentle). After a week of frustration, his skin finally started to settle and he slept so much better. Every baby’s skin is different of course, but that combo honestly gave us hope when nothing else worked. Sending you so much love it really does get better once you find what works for your little one x

If you haven't tried this - I used to use it on my daughter https://amzn.eu/d/882yEPa I think it also comes in a cream as well as an ointment. She only really had eczema behind her knees but it was so hard to get on top of, balmonds was one of very few things that worked.
I know alot of people swear by Aveeno but it did not work at all for my DD, just irritated her skin more!
Also, if numerous creams for GP haven't worked, do push for a referral to a dermatologist for further input x
