Where is best for my partner to stay whilst my child is having an operation at Great Ormond Street?

Hi everyone.

We don’t live in London so will need to find someone to stay whilst there. My child is due to have an operation and is due to stay in for 5 nights. First night is covered by hospital in the patient accommodation.

I will be staying in the hospital with my child but my partner will need to find somewhere to stay. Family accommodation has been mentioned but isn’t guaranteed and may need to move rooms which seems a faff. Seeing it as a base for during the day so can pop for a shower, nap etc whilst the other parent is in charge at the hospital.

Not wanting to spend loads as travel has already cost us quite a bit but where is best to stay? Any hotels nearby any good? An airb&b? Where did you stay if you have ever had a child staying at GOSH?

Many thanks

Unlikely to get Ronald McDonald house for five nights, we were in hospital for six plus weeks before we got a space. It’s an expensive area so honestly you have to just suck up the horrendous cost of a local hotel (we did a lot of premier inns) or an air b and b. Or alternatively be happy to stay further out but it doesn’t work so well as a base.

could also try a home swap?

@TheDisillusionedAnarchist Thank you for commenting. Yes going to have to suck it up I think. The hospital has given us a good list of hotels saying some offer GOSH discounts. Didn’t think of a home swap so will look into that x

OP, you could try aparthotels so that you can save money with self catering.

The YHA in central London has private rooms, and access to a kitchen and shows availability in November.

On a tight budget, the generator backpacker hostel is nearby. There are also lots of tourist hotels like President and National that are a couple of blocks from GOSH.

My Mum and Dad go to London several times a year (don’t ask!) and they have taken to staying in The President in Russell Square. Apparently it’s because it’s a bit cheaper than others in the same area (and that’s important when you go as much as they do), it’s close to a tube station, and clean and handy to plenty of amenities. We joined them on their last trip and it was fine, but most importantly for you it’s a three minute walk from GOSH- I know because I got lost and dandered past it. There’s a Pret right next door to the Hotel and across the road there’s one of those Wasabi sushi places, so some reliable options for food very close without even going into the Tesco and other cafes and restaurants that I didn’t take note of. Hope it all goes smoothly for you all x

The President hotel is super close to GOSH. Same road as current entrance.

I know GOSH have a premier inn on the same side as original entrance.

Theres quite a few premier inns around which an easy walk.

When you are at GOSH your only two streets away from the brunswick shopping centre which has a proper supermarket. You normally have access to a fridge and microwave.

As well as the President, you could look at the hotels on Cartwright Gardens (Harlingford, Mentone, Euro). They're only a 5-10 min walk from GOSH and it's a quiet, calm leafy crescent which might be nice if you're dealing with a stressful situation.

The Royal national Hotel is 5 mins around the corner and is a budget hotel. It's big and decent enough, as I understand.
