I suppose it’s just a ride it out thing..he’s dipping in his neck and ribs so I’ve taken him to a&e ..we stayed for 2hrs so they could do 2x observation and his oxygen was between 97-98% both times so been sent home and told to return if anything gets worse..I’m so anxious!

Unfortunately croup usually gets worse at night so maybe have a little bag packed in case you need to do a late night trip to the hospital. We've found a sudden change to a cold temperature sometimes helps, like sitting in the cool garden for a bit. But ultimately if they are struggling to breathe and sucking in then absolutely go back in. I'm surprised they sent him away to be honest! Did they give him any steroids?

Recommend if get a worse to wrap him up put in his pram
and go for a walk in the cold air . It does really help

Humidifier helped mine and some Vicks on feet then socks on.

change of temp is good, so out in the colder air.

good luck. Tomorrow will be better.

Fresh air is the best thing. My DS had recurring croup and I spent many a night sat in front of a wide open window getting the fresh air into his lungs.

@ThisRareOtter I was surprised too, his breathing was so noisy and wheezy! They gave me an ‘open access’ letter so I can head straight to the children’s ward and they’ll admit him if he gets any worse..took him for long walk this evening which seems to have helped and while the cough has been worse tonight the wheezy breathing isn’t as bad thankfully. No , no steroids either, Dr said unless he gets seriously unwell and needs oxygen support then they wouldn’t use steroids as they can be harsh on small babys🤷🏽‍♀️

How was your night op?

stitty · 02/10/2025 09:30

@Peclet pretty awful he was up every half an hour😫I feel like the sucking in at the ribs/neck is worse in the morning so I really panicked and brung him to a&e then it subsided over the day and wasn’t too bad..he’s woke up this morning and it is quite bad but trying not to worry

You can always ask your GP to see you today, my surgery has a paediatric oxygen monitor & they can either give you peace of mind or back up any decision to go back to hospital.

I bet you feel horrible.. Any better through the day!

@OtterMummy2024 I’ve just bought an owlet sock too for peace of mind, it’s saying his oxygen is 97% and heart rates normal, he’s much better through the day compared to night/just waking up

It used to be recommended that a steamy room would help (sitting in bathroom with shower running) but cool night air is the preferred method now.
Ibuprofen may help a little - both as a painkiller and an anti inflammatory but if you are concerned in anyway go straight back x

Trickletreat · 02/10/2025 16:13

We have tried the steamy room but we found the cold night air worked better, either walk him round in his pram or take him for a drive with the windows down, but don't hesitate to take him to A& E if you're worried.

Seems a lot better now, thank you all! Panic over - I think. Plenty of cold air and pram walks definitely helped
