I doubt it - a bit of bread mould never hurt anyone! Done it loads of times myself.

BetterOffNow · 23/09/2025 09:59

If they're allergic to penicillin it might be a problem but otherwise if if was that bad they'd have stopped eating it surely?
I'm sure they'll be fine

INeedNewShoes · 23/09/2025 10:23

My hunch is they'll be fine.

I once ate a sandwich having found mould on the bread as I had no other food with me. I was completely fine!

What on earth has penicillin got to do with bread mould?!

Penicillin comes from mould.

The blue mould on bread, cheese, etc. is penicillin

IWasScaredToBeHeld · 23/09/2025 10:47

Itll be fine.

we’ve all done it!

Uhh no it's not

Penicillin comes from mould.

Not bread mould though! They're not related!

They are related. The mould isn't necessarily penicillin, there are lots of different types, but it could definitely be present in very small amounts. Not sure it would cause an allergic reaction like the other poster said.

Penicillin mould isn't bread mould, they have absolutely nothing in common except that they're both types of mould. and the medicine has nothing to do with the mould- you can be allergic to the med but not the mould!!

BetterOffNow · 23/09/2025 10:55

Trust me, I'm allergic to penicillin so I know what might kill me!
Bread mould can be penicillium which is what's used to make penicillin and would have the same allergen properties.

Please speak to a doctor about this, that just isn't true. They don't make medicine from bread mould, and allergies to penicillin are not the same as allergies to penicillium.

I'll just avoid mouldy bread thanks, not going to take the risk for something I'm not going to enjoy anyway!

Penicillin mould CAN grow on bread. However, there are lots of types of mould that it could be too, and if it were penicillin mould it would only contain very small amounts of the actual penicillium.

Either way, not a good idea to eat mouldy bread. It probably hasn't done any harm to the OPs son though.

Stomach acids will kill off any teeny tiny spores.
