itchy red spot on DD5 hand that isn't going away - I'm not petrified

I feel absolutely awful, my 5 year old daughter had has a small red pimple spot on her hand for months and I thought nothing of it, but I have just read a post on Facebook about a child with paediatric melanoma and I've just spiralled thinking that this could be what my daughter has!

I have health anxiety anyway and now I feel like I've just missed something so serious and I'm a mess.

I've attached a picture- can someone please try and talk me down whilst I wait to see the GP in the morning? She's told me tonight when I asked that she's always itching it but she's never mentioned it before!

The title should say 'now petrified!'

its not the clearest photo but could it not be an insect bite?

miniworry · 22/09/2025 20:33

@Geranium879 it's been there for months- I'm just looking back at photos. I can't believe I missed it 🥺 surely an insect bite wouldn't last that long?

Could it be a spider nevus? My sister had one as a child, it was harmless, but it was removed because it was on her face.

miniworry · 22/09/2025 20:48

She's asleep now but I've attempted to get a clearer picture of the spot

@LikeStrawberriesAndCream I saw this on my Google search but they are meant to almost look like they have legs rent that, this seems more rounded

I think there are different types of angioma

I can kind of see faint "spiders legs" on your pic - but it is hard to tell from a photo. It does look similar to my sister's spider nevus.
It's clearly worrying you, and I understand that, I get really anxious when it comes to my DC's health too.
Hopefully GP can put your at rest tomorrow.

landlordhell · 22/09/2025 21:10

It doesn’t look remotely worrying.

miniworry · 22/09/2025 21:11

I've booked a private paediatric dermatologist appointment for Friday morning- I've just tried to 'drag' the centre of the spot and it does disappear then when I let go it refills again. The thing getting me is the 'itch' as apparently they aren't meant to itch but my DD says it does.

Are you sure it's not a molluscum? Looks similar and they are itchy.

Geranium879 · 22/09/2025 21:20

Have you see her scratch at it ? Children say all sorts of things esp when attention is drawn to things. I had a spider nevus treated on my nose not long ago and it looked like a red dot (no legs).

I do understand as when my older DD was 1, a brown dot appeared on her foot. It got bigger ( as her foot was growing) , gradually becoming a diamond shape . I had her to see dermatologists and they said it was a benign acral mole. It was kept an eye on for about 18m. It has stabilised and hasn’t changed in a long time. I was sick with worry at the time though..

miniworry · 22/09/2025 21:23

@landlordhell the tho ha that's worrying me is that I looked back on pictures from jan/Feb and it's still there (looks the same size) and everything we hear about spots is if they don't go away to be worried

OP posts:
miniworry · 22/09/2025 21:24

@Geranium879 thank you so much for sharing that story. That's exactly how I feel now, consumed with worry that it's something sinister.

I'll be honest I haven't seen her itch it that's why I was surprised when she said it, so maybe you're right and she's saying it as I drew attention to it!

miniworry · 22/09/2025 21:25

@candycanesand reading about the molluscum it talks about it being a fluid filled spot and this is all totally red.

Looks very much like a spider naevi. Harmless, just a visible blood vessel. I have one and it’s been there dived I was a young child.

Geranium879 · 22/09/2025 21:30

If it’s not changed in months that’s a good sign. A melanoma would have evolved.

Geranium879 · 22/09/2025 21:32

Here’s a spider angina on a child’s nose. Looks v similar?

Geranium879 · 22/09/2025 21:33

Sorry posted too soon

My DD had a red spot under her eye area for years. It never concerned her or me. Then when she was about 5 it just disappeared. You tend to know if it’s something to worry about.

That’s generally for adults

A melanoma is a pigment-filled lesion - it wouldn’t blanch and then fill up as you describe. From the pics, it looks nothing like a melanoma. Totally understand why you’re freaking out - I have health anxiety with my kids, it’s such a horrible panicky feeling. But this does not look worrying. Absolutely go ahead with the appointment to put your mind at ease, but don’t tie yourself in knots in the meantime xxx

miniworry · 22/09/2025 22:13

@cinnamonroll1 thank you so much for your kind words and your reassurance. I've always struggled to remain rational when my kids have symptoms ever since my little boy developed meningitis at 4 weeks old and the only symptom he had was a temperature. Ever since then I always think the smallest symptom means the worst case scenario and I'm feeling so guilty I've just not considered it being there for months without disappearing.

@Geranium879 it does actually look a little bit like this- all the images I'd seen definitely looked more spidery than this hence why I thought it might not be that- thank you!
