Pls help!! DD had a viral infection and middle ear infection was on antibiotics, finished 2 days ago. Now DD has had low temps of 34.1 at night since Thursday but not during the day. I've taken her A&E 3x since then and they think it's odd but just said it's part of the viral infection. DD is easy to wake, taking a bottle, only had diarrhoea today but I started her on probiotics to counter the antibiotic gut flora stripping. She is wearing a 3.5tog and pj's under and the room is 24c so it is baffling me. I've tried different thermometers and also tested on myself as Dr in A&E questioned my thermometer accuracy. She eventually warms up after a bottle, me putting a coat on her and a duvet when she starts sweating and then cools again. This is only happening at night. Before bed and during the day she is 36.3/4. Only other symptoms currently is a small cough, diarrhoea today and a slightly lower appetite (eating meals not snacks) I'm up all night with her checking her temp.

What was her temp measuring at in A and E?

Quandri · 22/09/2025 00:48

Why are you checking her temp all night? Is she wakening up?

Silversal · 22/09/2025 00:54

Temp in A&E after triage and being in a hot car with heated seats was 36.5 twice and 34.4 once.
Yes, she is crying out/thrashing in bed with me.

Although 34.4 went up to normal shortly after

Are you giving her pain relief? Some kids temp drops after that

No pain relief as she's not in pain. I am so confused as to what this could be.

I’d give calpol anyway it will help to equalise her temp.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 22/09/2025 01:11

were probiotics recommended to you by the doctors to take alongside the antibiotics? I would only do this under medical guidance, because it can cause some uncomfortable side effects.

It's also normal for people to drop temperature on a night, our bodies cool down when we sleep.

If A&E have tested her infection markers and they're going in the right direction then it probably is just a side effect of the infection anyway, especially if she hasn't got any increase in symptoms.

Silversal · 22/09/2025 02:13

A&E couldn't take bloods as they had no numbing cream, so I went to outpatients this afternoon as they could - should know by tomorrow hopefully.
They said to not give calpol this morning in A&E which contradicted the GP saying to give. I've done both and had the same reaction of the dipped temps. I'm wondering if low iron is the cause as she did have this a while back. Iron blood test was also taken today so hopefully we have some answers.
I think I'm just super concerned about any permanent damage with hypothermia or if it is something more sinister. I had to demand the bloods today as they just wanted to send us home again.

It is normal for our body temperature to drop by 1-1.5 degrees when we’re asleep, most us don’t notice as our temperature isn’t normally taken. Anything below 35°C is a risk factor for hypothermia, but for sustained periods.

Apart from temperature does she have any other signs of hypothermia?

But the OP is talking about temperatures of 34.1.

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/09/2025 03:38

How old is she? And apart from the temperature, does she have any other symptoms? Does she seem very unwell?

LondonGalll · 22/09/2025 04:16

My normal body temperature is 36 something during the day. Do temperatures drop at night?

justrelaxandsleep · 22/09/2025 05:15

My daughter’s temperature used to do this when she was recovering from illness. It is worrying but she was fine.

Lookathestars · 22/09/2025 05:51

My ds temp drops after illness aswell, its like it takes a few days to get the hang of regulating it again. Not as low as 34, but I've seen 35.1 before. He does get high fevers too at the other end of the scale. I think you've done the right thing with bloods to rule out sepsis

Simonjt · 22/09/2025 05:57

Yes I know that.

Clockface222 · 22/09/2025 06:15

Is she drinking ok, how many wet nappies? It could be dehydration which is seen as a medical emergency in babies and should be seen in a & e although I think you can get rehydration sachets for babies in pharmacies.

INeedNewShoes · 22/09/2025 06:20

Does she feel cold to the touch? I'd be careful re heated car seats, making the room excessively warm etc. as could that make her body try harder to cool her down?

Nestingbirds · 22/09/2025 06:42

I have been hospitalised with a similar virus (mine was the new strain of Covid) and it affects the tummy and causes gastro issues. Are you sure she is fully hydrated? Electrolytes? My temperature was dropping very low and my blood pressure. Has her bloody pressure been checked? It’s almost certainly the virus, but I would take her back - you sound very worried.

Why is she thrashing about if she isn’t in pain? Please give her calpol.

Lolayu7 · 22/09/2025 06:50

My DS is 5 , his temp is always very low at night, first time I noticed it was after a fever I panicked. The Dr said it sometimes happens after a fever but his seems to sit around 35 in the night and it seems to go lower after a temp . It seems to just be normal for him.

But if your worried just keep taking her, you know best . Hope she's better soon.

SeptemberNCing · 22/09/2025 06:55

This happened to DS once. He had a fever for about 10 days and then one night felt very cold with temperature of around 34. I freaked out too because low temp is one of the signs of sepsis I think so saw my GP who called a consultant at the hospital who said it’s very normal after a viral infection and as long as DS is generally fine in himself, nothing to worry about.

IWasScaredToBeHeld · 22/09/2025 06:57

If her temp was normal in A&E (and rose to be normal), I would say this is an issue with your thermometer. Get a new one and see if that makes a difference.

if it’s any reassurance, my temperature is routinely in the 35s. No health problems, I just seem to run cold. Sometimes when I get ill, it can actually fall instead of rise.

37 for adults. 36.6c for children.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 22/09/2025 10:21

Both myself and DS regularly have temperatures of 34 ish. It's not uncommon for either of us to get the "low temp" warning on our digital thermometer. I read low just this morning when checking the thermometer as DS has a bad case of Monday morning malingering.

I frequently have to check the thermometer on DH who's always around 37 degrees.

Darragon · 22/09/2025 10:29

People need to learn the difference between internal and external temperature. 🙄
