16 Month Old Keeps Choking On Milk

Hi, hoping someone can give me advice - my 16 month old has developed a habit of choking / coughing when she has her milk. She uses a transitional bottle (Dr. Brown's Milestones Wide-Neck Sippy Bottle), she has 1 bottle after waking up in the morning and 1 bedtime bottle before bed.

It feels like it’s getting worse, she chokes / coughs so much sometimes she’s sick which means change of bedclothes etc which is becoming very frustrating (and obviously not nice for her).

I’ve tried my own research - some websites say the flow is too fast on the bottle, she’s had the bottle for a while now and I swear it’s got worse so not sure the bottle is the issue? But I could be wrong! Another suggestion is possible dairy intolerance - as her poo has also been a bit off and on recently. Can a 16 month old suddenly have an allergy to dairy? (She has dairy butter on her toast with no complaints) and as far as I am aware she has no bloating or stomach pain, or rashes.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what did they change? Thanks!

I would transition her onto just cups/straw cup (tum tum tots or similar) sooner rather than later. She’s not developing a mature drinking style (sip and swallow rather than suck and guzzle) from bottles/teats and it’s probably causing the sickness.

Ok thank you, I have some straw cups I tried some time ago but she just doesn’t get how to suck from a straw 🤦🏼‍♀️ but that was a while ago so I’ll give it another go.

Would she take it in a free flow sippy cup?

Our dd had some swallow issues and we found these so great that she still sometimes uses them at 3. We like them because the straw comes apart for cleaning properly:

Lovely thank you I’ll give these a try. I tried a bottle with a straw a while ago and she didn’t get how to suck it so I’ll try again. Thank you

I’m not sure but I’ll try this definitely.
