What is a normal duration for a baby (9 weeks old) to not poo

It’s been a few days since my baby had a poo, I can’t remember exactly but I have a feeling it was Tuesday so 5 days ago. Is this something to be concerned about? I am not sure when to worry about it and when to see the GP. Should I go asap or wait it out a few more days? Thanks x

Breast or formula fed? Breastfed anything up to 2 weeks isn't a big concern. At that age mine used to go once a week on a Wednesday morning!

Dd once went 11 days without pooping at about 5 months old. I was reluctant to leave the house after day 5/6 in anticipation of the inevitable poonami. She was exclusively breastfed at the time.
She has no long term digestive issues.

My DS (breastfed) went through a stage of pooping every 10 days, it was normal for him. It depends on whether they’re passing wind, seem fine or in pain / uncomfortable, and whether they’re still eating normally though. If you are not otherwise concerned I’d give it a few more days, just make sure they’re staying well hydrated and do some leg cycling and tummy massage to help things along.

@DappledThings she is formula fed so should this be more of a concern do you know? Or is 5 days with no poo normal for formula fed babies? I literally have no idea what to do, 5 days seems crazy long. Still weeing fine though, passing wind and burping as usual though

Yes, if FF I think should be going more often. Worth a call to GP but don't worry too much. Usually they have a sixth sense and if you get an appointment will have a massive poo just as you are walking out of the house to get there!

Yes that is a concern for FF babies they should be pooing most days. I would book an appointment with your GP but also have a look at some on line baby massage videos and have a go at some of the stuff. It very well might help get things going.

I had an amazing health visitor who spoke about this. She said even as adults people are naturally different and have different regularity. She said the things she would look for is, is the baby generally well in themselves? If they are happy, alert, acting normally then that's a good sign. If they are much fussier than usual, crunching up or crying in certain positions then straight to gp. Are they eating normally? Are they weeing normally? Are they passing wind? Is this a big change i.e. they have been clockwork regular 2 times a day and suddenly nothing then that's noteworthy.

If they are happy in themselves, eating fine, wet nappies then it's very unlikely a cause for concern. That said, golden rule for babies is never is a harm to get them looked at. Every health professional I've ever spoken to has been clear they never mind giving babies a once over.

However, first I would do a warm bath, then a tummy massage (plenty of youtube videos on this) then leg bicycles, stretches, hip rotations etc. Lots of exercise to stimulate that part of the body and finish off with tummy time. My wee one can go over a week and I find that routine really helps. He'll go down for tummy time and hell is unleashed from the cutest baby bottom.

Excellent advice @Firstsuggestions

Have you changed formula brand or type lately, or started making it up differently? Just ruling that out as a possible cause.
