Daughters dandruff

DD 12 has dandruff. Can get quite bad - a few years ago she had flakes the size of my fingertip coming out. Used tea tree and it worked a treat on her scalp, unfortunately it turned out she’s allergic to it. The back of her neck was red, sore and flakey for weeks. So obviously stopped using that

it calmed down for a while, but seems to be coming back recently. Use Head and Shoulders on it, but it doesn’t seem to be having any affect

Is there any good solutions for teenage dandruff that isn’t tea tree or head and shoulders?

Neutrogena T gel was the only thing that worked for me.

Apple cider vinegar wash and really rub the scalp

Body shop ginger shampoo and conditioner.

Nizoral shampoo. The ketoconazole in itis an antifungal.

Sounds like she might have sebboriac dermatitis. I’ve got it. Started about aged 12. I was referred to a dermatologist who prescribed Cocois ointment. It removes the flakes and helps clear the skin underneath.

Daughter had it bad as a child and it was related to eczema. Nizoral was good but very expensive for thick hair. . Body shop ginger worked and more affordable. Gp did prescribe something when it got do bad scalp was bleeding.
it is worrying but can be sorted.

Neutrogena T gel was the only thing that worked for me.

They've now discontinued it. They only have the clear daily stuff which I found useless. Polytar might be a good alternative or maybe Nizoral shampoo.

this worked a treat on my DS - and easy and cheap to buy 👍
ETA although it says baby, I used this on him when he was an older child as well.

Thanks all, some food for thought. Since we stopped using the tea tree her neck has cleared up fine. Her scalp doesn’t look sore or red, I was just surprised how much dandruff there was after using head and shoulders for a couple of months

Yeah, sounds like eczema, not dandruff. A lot of shampoos will exacerbate a naturally dry scalp as well. Best speaking to a pharmacist (do you have a big Boots near you with a good pharmacy team?) to get some advice on shampoos that are more in the skincare section as opposed to the shampoo section. Plus, she might need a prescription one when it gets bad.

Consider avoiding Sodium Laurate Sulphate containing shampoos, as that tends to dry the skin out.
