Chicken pox

Hi how do you know if it’s chicken pox? My daughter has some blisters that have appeared and I don’t want to give her time off school unnecessarily as she’s just started back so how do I know if it’s chicken pox or something else?

Typically most blister spots that appear on a child without immunity to pox will be pox. If they spread by morning, I expect it is pox. However, if she is ill then she needs to be off school regardless of the cause.

Hopefully this helps.

id suggest if you are not sure then keep her off at least a day to see
how things progress as its so contagious

Where are they?
as hand foot and mouth would be round mouth, bum, hands etc.

SlushMountain · 07/09/2025 15:36

Legs/feet and hands mostly none on face

Chicken pox usually starts on the torso I think, or at least it'd be weird for it not to be on the torso quite soon after spots starting. They multiply pretty quickly.

Oh ok there is none at all there so sounds like it might not be chicken pox then

Could it be hand foot and mouth ?

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 15:49

Sounds like hand, foot and mouth. I’d check with school as they might not let her in depending on their individual policies. It’s so contagious that some places don’t bother with isolating but if she’s in Reception, you might not want to be know as the person who was the cause for lots of the class to go down ill and subsequently the parents too. HFM is awful in adults.

Don't think it's hand foot and mouth as nothing in her mouth at all and she's fine not feeling unwell

It’s not always in mouths and sometimes it’s only in mouths. It also can spread over several days. Some children don’t notice they have it, some are hospitalised.
