22 month old refusing to use her arm and saying it’s hurts!

Hi everyone just looking for a bit of advice, I have 3 kids but haven’t come across anything like this when they were this age, my older 2 are 10 and 8.

dd is 22 months, she hasn’t hurt herself but last night we did have a family gathering and she is the only baby so gets played with a lot my by own two older children and my sister in laws older children (9,15,17) they are all so good with her though and love her, she just came to dh crying saying her hand hurts, she has done this in the past but been fine after a couple of minutes, but all night I’ve noticed she’s slept with her hand on her tummy. This morning she is in bed with me now but she is only moving her other arm, she put weight on her arm to crawl over to me in bed and lie down with me and she started crying. She seemed to be moving her actual hand around fine but it’s when it’s the rest of the arm she cries.

i am getting really worried but at the same time she hasn’t had any obvious injury, the older children were playing with her last night at the family gathering but as I’ve said they are all very good with her and if she had hurt herself they would have informed me. Shall I take her to an and e or wait and see? I already have health anxiety myself so I’m starting to panic!

I would go to a&e for that

HelpMeUnpickThis · 02/09/2025 08:45

I would go to A&E.

My GP can do x-rays so maybe ask about that first to avoid a long wait.

I’d go to a&e
poor baby is suffering

Backfromholareyou · 02/09/2025 08:50

This family gathering was last night

Thank you. I’ll give the kids breakfast then take her down to an and e, will have to take my older two as well as she is in work!

i just know it’s going to be awful, she was fine around doctors until she had a very bad case of hand foot and mouth on her first birthday and she got checked over by a doctor and was screaming badly, since then, a doctor only needs to look at her, not touch her and she is screaming and so so upset so I’m really upset about having to take her as it’s so hard to watch

Has anyone been swinging her round by the arms? Sounds like a pulled elbow to me. Easy to fix (no broken bones involved) but does need A&E

Why will your older two need to miss school?

I second this. My DS had this age three when he tripped. Nothing showing on xray but when we returned as he still wasn't using it, they did some sort of manoeuvre on his arm and he was as right as rain the next day

My 8 year old son has now just told me when I kept asking them that my mil ( kids grandmother) was swinging her around yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️

she is visiting from Pakistan, going back next week. It’s awful having her here anyway and now this

Thanks all, I will take her to a and e!

This is the horrendous in-laws that completely blank you?

OP, you have big issues but your priority now needs to be to get the kids ready and go to a&e

Can older children be left with visiting family?

Mynewnameis · 02/09/2025 09:03

I had the arm swing injury when I was 2, and again when I was older... my dad swung me.
Dont worry she will be OK, but take her to a&e

Gininvolved · 02/09/2025 09:04

I’d agree with the dislocated shoulder theory. Happened to my youngest with playing rough once. The dr said it’s an extremely common injury that lots of parents unintentionally do by pulling the child up if they’ve fallen over. As soon as it’s pushed back in they will be right as rain.

this is meant kindly but you will have to get over your personal feelings. It won’t be awful - your child will be fixed / happy / healthy

it’s important to parent correctly. Model good behaviour and show confidence / authority in making correct decisions etc and that includes taking your child to seek medical help

seratoninmoonbeams · 02/09/2025 09:06

Definitely a dislocated elbow I bet. My DS had this happen twice…..You know as you walk along and they swing off your hand when you’re holding hands. That’s all it took….. A and E said it’s the number one reason for visits for under eights or something.

seratoninmoonbeams · 02/09/2025 09:07

Sorry. Didn’t RTFT 🤦🏻‍♀️ gets on my nerves when people do that…. 😆🤣

Gassylady · 02/09/2025 09:08

Another one saying it might be a pulled elbow. Basically a quick manoeuvre can pop radial head back into place. No need for extra pain relief or sedation. One of the most satisfying procedures in A&E as it is quick and effective.

Zaina89 · 02/09/2025 10:05

So, whilst I was giving her breakfast she has now started using and moving her arm fine, though I’m still thinking to get her checked

Check if she can do the movement you need for opening a jar. I still remember that was pretty much how they diagnosed my elbow pop.
