Chicory root and constipation

Hi all,
My 11 month old really struggles with constipation, to the point he bleeds.

Im experimenting with the kiddylicious prune and apple pouches as this seems to loosen him up (I think its the pouch causing it) I've noticed in the ingredients have chicory root.

Has any one tried chicory root inulin for their little ones? Has it helped?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I would speak the GP about lactulose TBH. If your LO is bleeding, that needs sorting out sooner rather than later. Lactulose is a stool softener rather than a true laxative, it's an indigestible sugar that pulls water into the bowels and so makes it comfortable for the person to go. But it won't make the person dependent on it.

My LO got weaning constipation and would cry when pooing; lactulose sorted that out and then we were about to move to gentler solutions (prunes and really encouraging water).

I have a child who had chronic constipation for 8 years. Laxido/movicol was the only thing that worked for her. You need to get it sorted asap because your child might begin withholding and it’ll get so much worse. Have you been to the gp? Ideally you want to be referred to the continence team if this is an ongoing issue but there can be a wait. Prune juice did help mine a bit but she needed actual medication as well and it sounds like your LO does too

We have been prescribed cosmocol by the GP but getting him to take it is impossible plus when I picked it up from the chemist she was reluctant to give it to me due to how it works and what happens if you dont have enough water with it, So that worried me.

When they get a bit older you can try inulin probiotic gummies - look like sweets. But very good for gut health and regularity.

My two year old suffers regular bouts of constipation and we use a pinch of Psyllium powder in yoghurt or any food with liquid. Probably only half a teaspoon worth a day but it guarantees her being regular this could be worth a try. It sounds like it works like lactulose if draws water so it helps bulk and soften the stool.
