Well as the name suggests this is a pretty niche one.

took dog for a walk this morning at 9/10, saw them licking a bone in one of the fields which I think belongs to a deer, it’s been there a few days.

Fast forward to this evening, toddler was caught drinking water from the dog bowl. Nothing I can do is there really? Wouldn’t normally bother me a bit but knowing the dog licked this bloody bone has now made me feel slightly concerned.

Gads min..NE Scottish expression.
No advice hopefully wee one will be fine.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 27/08/2025 20:08

Based on experience, nothing good comes of watching what toddlers put in their mouths. Best not to know. On the plus side, their immune system is probably working on combating any deer or dog disease as we speak.

It’s a gross thought but dog may well lick you or DC and you’d think nothing of it. I’m sure they’ll be fine.

Pollqueen · 27/08/2025 20:13

They'll be grand, toddlers have been known to lick/ingest far worse and have survived

Silverbirchleaf · 27/08/2025 20:26

Just keep an eye on the dog and if he starts to look unwell, fatigued, vomiting etc, then take him to the vet’s.

Beamur · 27/08/2025 20:28

Dogs lick various disgusting things and then lick us.
Chances are high your toddler will be just fine..

I know many MNers are unusually obsessed about their dogs and treat them as a child, I think on this occasion OP is actually more concerned her actual child…

FuzzyWolf · 27/08/2025 20:28

Toddlers do far worse. It’ll be fine.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2025 20:29

I’m sorry because I know the worry. But it is funny! DD would absolutely have done this. And did worse. She is in rude health at 14.

MyAcornWood · 27/08/2025 20:31

Oh god toddlers are so gross. As are dogs, let’s be honest side eyes my rancid little canine companions
It’ll be fine. It’s gross, but so unlikely to really cause any issues imo.

prettyniche · 27/08/2025 20:45

Thanks all! We will see how we go… or should that be Doe… sorry not sorry

Obviously my attempt at humour failed (withdraws application to attend the Edinburgh fringe festival 2026).

Don’t worry unless he starts to look ill. My DS was a regular kibble and chappie eater from the ages of 2-5. Mums dogs. If he disappeared we’d often find him in kitchen on all fours sharing the bowls with the dogs (they were v accommodating). He’s now 32 and has a strong immune system.

macaroni234 · 27/08/2025 22:18

My 19 year old son who used to drink from the dogs bowl when he was a toddler has been to the Dr twice in his life. Once for an ear infection and another time for an ingrown toenail. He has an amazing immune system! And that dog was always eating random shite on walks! Sheep poo was a favourite.
I’m sure your child will be fine. Just keep an eye out for a bit.
