11-month old - too frequent poos?

My 11-month old poos around 5 times per day. It’s been this way since he was about 6 months old, but I feel recently it’s even more frequent, it went from 3-4 times per day to at least 5 soiled nappies a day. The poos are not watery or diarrhoea-like and he seems well otherwise. Should I be concerned?

My youngest, when he was days/weeks/months old, used to poop in practically every single nappy. Like you I was worried so questioned the paediatrician about it. He replied that it's better he poops than be constipated and not to worry. As my youngest got older the number of poops have reduced to normal frequencies so no problems there.

However, for peace of mind, you can double check with your GP at your little one's next appointment.

Mine was like this too. He ate well and never seemed to be in pain or distressed by it. There was a slight bump in frequency as he finished weaning, but then it evened out - now 18mo and goes 1-2x a day

I sh*t you not (excuse the pun) my son used to poo 8 times a day at that age. He's 11 now and goes a couple times a day I reckon. It can be normal but as it's not common, it feels concerning. You can always double check but you might just have a poo bags on your hands 😁

Thanks all. It’s reassuring to read that he’s not the only one. Today we had 7 poos, that’s a new record, I might give the health visitor a call just to be sure. So far I’ve usually been met with ‘Is he eating? Peeing? Engaging? Then all is well’ by GPs with any concerns I had (poo and otherwise) and that probably makes sense, but I still get a little concerned about my little one every now and then.

I’d say it’s pretty normal, though it’s always wise to double-check with your health visitor. My youngest was similar at that age. She did have a dairy allergy, but since we were already avoiding dairy, it wasn’t related. I spoke to every medical professional I could—health visitors, GPs, pediatricians, nutritionists—and they all agreed it was fine. Apparently, it really varies from child to child, and going frequently is generally better than not going enough. She’s cut down on how often she goes now, but she still tends to go more than average.

Not a nice subject but what are the smell & consistency of the nappies? Similar to an above poster both my children have a dairy allergy and before I worked out what was triggering it I noticed multiple times a day my baby at a few months old was producing not nice smelling nappies with a poor consistency. If your child’s nappies look and smell ok then frequency as others have said shouldn’t be a worry, if you are unsure check with GP / health visitor to get further advice (though mine was rubbish with my children’s dairy allergy).

Most people don’t poo enough!!
if we were eating good high fibre diets we’d go after every meal
