Regular Fever and Teething

I’m at my wits end with my 18mo’s health. Since turning 1 and starting teething (late) we’ve had repeated bouts of fevers 39 + that last 3-4 days at a time. Fine, kids get lots of viruses and this is what we are repeatedly told after dr and a&e visits. However every time there are no other symptoms, no cold, no cough, nobody else in the house is sick. Literally nothing except the fever…. plus a new tooth/teeth. This has happened around 7-8 times in 6 months. Blood tests showed nothing, no reason for poor immune system even though I’m still breastfeeding.

There is zero sleep. Struggles to eat, and very obvious clawing at mouth/discomfort but all we are told is it’s nothing to do with teeth or anything else. Just repeat viruses which only cause a fever. Dc is not at nursery and we have tried mercilessly to avoid situations with lots of bugs, soft plays etc for months to try and break cycle of viruses.

Has anyone experienced these repeated fevers before whereby there are no other symptoms. All the scientific evidence said teething doesn’t cause fevers but it seems like such a coincidence. We had barely any illness at all the first year before teething began. Any experiences much appreciated.

A fever with no other symptoms is actually quite common in small kids. Medicate for the teething pain and crack on. Be thankful there are no other symptoms!

If they're struggling to eat and not sleeping though I would suggest that maybe they do have sore throat/other pain, but it isn't obvious (or perhaps just the teeth).

Do they settle with pain relief?

There IS scientific evidence that teething causes fevers, just not in every child & they don't want parents to ignore red flags.

@NuffSaidSam thank you, we have three DC and not experienced the standalone fevers much before, not frequently anyway. During several of these episodes the GP has done examinations and doesn’t see anything in throat/ears/etc. and has sent us to a&e due to unexplained fever. They’ve done xrays, urine, and been very thorough but no other signs were there of any pain or infection. In a way I would sometimes rather there were other symptoms so we can explain the fevers. The drs said to us unexplained fever is usually followed up (as it’s always very high and doesn’t always come down with medicine).

they settle sometimes with pain relief. The child has never slept through the night, not once. Sleep is generally horrendous.. but worse during the fevers.
