5 month old with bright green poo!!

I have a 5 month old who is exclusively breast fed and hasn’t starting weaning yet. Up until a few days ago up she used to have yellow/mustardy coloured poo twice a day. Recently she is pooing around 8 times a day and it’s bright green.

she’s well in herself. She has her last set of vaccines last Wednesday and her first 2 teeth came through yesterday.

can that be a reason for the green poo or any suggestions on what it could be?

thank you

Thank you, I have done. I’m just waiting for the out of hours GP to call back but they said he could ring anytime before midnight. Just thought I’d ask whilst I wait x

Rota virus vaccine and teething can both cause green poo.

Came to say this. Rotavirus (the illness) as well as the vaccine can cause green poo - when DC was ill with D&V the GP mentioned this. Keep an eye on your LO for dehydration and fever in case it's coincidentally the real virus rather than the vaccine!

DD2 did the occasional random green poo. As she seemed otherwise fine I just watched her closely, then stopped worrying when she did the next normal one!

HotTiredDog · 23/08/2025 08:38

How is DD today?

Elisheva · 23/08/2025 08:42

Green poo is sometimes caused because they’re not getting too much fore milk and enough of the fat that’s in the hind milk. Sometimes when they guzzle and then break off from feeding because they’re have wind we assume they’re done on that breast and switch sides when they haven’t quite emptied it.

It'll be the rota virus vaccine. Im sure GP will reassure you but if she's otherwise well in herself it'll pass in a few days.
Make sure you're washing you hands etc after nappy changes.

They said it was probably the vaccine or the teething!

she’s fine today and has had a normal coloured poo 😅
