Little bruises in unusual spots - 1yr old.

Hi,
I’ve become concerned with some small bruises that’s appeared on my 1yr old, we have bloods booked in for next Tuesday but I’m wondering if any mums have experienced these small almost ‘pencil rubber’ dot sized, that have appeared following a virus?

First ones came up just above her knees (she’s crawling but these were above any impact zone) one on each.. Another appeared on her forearm and another on the opposite upper arm, all the same looking, size, small bruises - Which I’ll add a picture of.

I guess i’m trying to think of rational reasons and Dr thinks it’s just an aftermath of the latest virus she’s had (Been poorly back to back since starting nursery 3 months ago) but they are in unusual spots.
I’m just looking for reassurance really, instead of worrying sick of the dreaded ‘c’.

Any mums experienced these and it went away / was something minor?

TIA

Do you trust the Nursey? As in no one is hurting her

MummaSomething · 19/08/2025 20:37

Hi @cannynotsay :)
These appeared whilst on a family holiday and she’d been poorly with a small, upper respiratory virus.
These kind of small bruises just look so unlike an impact bruise and not even like a grab mark… I know for a fact no one has grabbed at her even remotely, so I just can’t pin it down to that.

Hi, I just wanted to reach out and say my DD had similar symptoms when she was around 15 months. The doctor sent us out to the hospital and bloods were taken. She was found to have ITP, which they attributed to a recent viral infection. The bruising subsided after a few weeks and the follow up bloods were back up normal. I do notice that she does bruise very easily so I keep an eye on it.

ITP, or Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura, is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a low platelet count, leading to excessive bruising and bleeding. For most children and adults, ITP is not a serious condition. Acute ITP in children often goes away on its own within a few weeks or months and does not return.

Thank you @Dawny1879 This is exactly what the Dr mentioned it could well be.. & that it is common for virus’s to cause this disruption.

Was it the same day they asked you to go to the hospital to have checks? I hope more than anything that this is not serious and I really appreciate you sharing that your daughter was similar, as it does calm the nerves somewhat!

Yes, we were sent to the hospital on the same day and we got her results within four hours of the bloods being drawn and were allowed to go home. They said there was nothing we had done wrong, or nothing we could do to improve it - it would just improve naturally with time.

I will say that on initial arrival at the hospital, the bruising was taken very seriously and I did feel like I was under a bit of scrutiny, so I think it is a good thing that this has already been discussed with your doctor.

It was hard watching her get her bloods drawn, so sending big hugs for that part...I was in tears.

Hope you get some answers soon ❤️

Thank you @Dawny1879!
sorry for additional questions, I hope you don’t mind - Did she have a fair few bruises that you noticed appear and were there a collection at the time? you’d sort of barely notice our DD’s now, as there are only two left but those ones did appear after the initial 4.

Were they similar in the fact they were small round ones or did they vary?

Was it just the bruising that appeared and other than a viral infection, were there no other symptoms?

Thanks again :) x

No my wee one had a fair few small circular bruises all over. Tbh as they were so small, I hadn't clicked that it was an issue. I couldn't put my finger on a time she had actually hurt herself or fallen. She had been playing in the garden loads and trying to copy her older brother and I had just thought it was her knocking, bumping herself / trying to find her confidence with walking. My DS is constantly covered in bruises from climbing etc, so I hadn't flagged in me, as she seemed happy and healthy. But it was nursery who kept asking about them. So it was that point I took her to the doctors.

She also had a pin-prick red rash under her eyes after a sickness bug and from crying and apparently it was down to ITP too.

My son had these too, and it turned out to be; Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP)

Post virus linked too, ended up with a plasma exchange, which is a bit like dialysis.

A bit scary at the time. But made a full recovery and now is a strapping 23 year old Royal Marine Officer.

I am sure all with be good with your little one x

I get these! Deeper and more deep bruise like, but like someone has poked me hard in random places. I have no idea what causes it so I just ignored it.
I get several a week and have done for years. Let me know if you find out what it is!

MummaSomething · 20/08/2025 07:26

Thanks @Dawny1879 … At least I know it’s best to just get these checked really.

@nodtik Oh wow, it’s really opening my eyes as to other things, as having to have an exchange is quite serious I assume? As I guess you wouldn’t do it unless necessary - So glad to hear your boy got much better :)

@Pricelessadvice Do yours hurt if they are deep bruises? Interesting but of course I will update - They do almost look like they start off quite far under come to think of it.

The only thing I have noticed which is reassuring really, since keeping a real eye is that she isn’t bruising easily… She’s knocked herself several times somewhat hard, like laying on our kitchen floor when tired and let her forehead drop from her resting on a teddy onto the hard floor, where I’ve thought ‘That was a bit of a bump’ and nothings come up at all! So.. That I’m hoping is a good sign.

Hi All,
bumping this one again, as since another couple of concerning bruising has caught my eye!
I’m going to request another run of bloods next week via the Drs but just to potentially ease my mind…

over the last 2 weeks, two quite deep bruises have appeared in arrears I wouldn’t call usual. She attends nursery and likely runs and has plenty of bumps but these bruises:

  1. On the bottom of her butt cheek (pic 1)
  2. On her tummy a few inches from her hip. (Pic 2 - as I saw it / Pic 3 - pulled a little at the skin to see if it was surface or quite deep)

Both quite dark deep blue bruises…
Any thoughts as to whether these would seem concerning?

Thanks!

** I realise pic 1 looks very subtle but the picture doesn’t really do justice as to how prominent it actually looked.

The bum bruise is very blurry, and (for obvious safeguarding reasons) you've not been able to show a wide enough view to really see the location. Impossible to comment. The bruise on the abdomen is, from what I can see, in an unusual place for a bruise. You'd expect a sinister cause to cause a greater number of bruises, so it is probably innocent, but as the location is odd it makes sense to get checked out.

SMM2020 · 02/04/2026 23:46

My eldest after having Covid, bruised horrendously, even more than normal - to the point I was worried, nursery were worried, GP were and then the hospital. They actually placed him under some safe guarding protocol due to their concerns which is fair considering how wide spread they were. Long story short, son has inherited my hypermobility and bruises like a peach. Just something to bear in mind but no harm in her being checked over - I’d say two bruises on belly and bum wouldn’t worry me personally, could have ran into the corner of a table for the belly to happen or fell on something for the bruise on the bum to happen.
