7 year-old suddenly full of burps all the time and full quicker

Has anyone else experienced this, potentially also alongside a newfound delayed travel sickness? My 7 year-old son suddenly has to get out loads and loads of burps at night, sometimes thinking he feels sick but actually it’s always burps, (unless he’s done lots of travelling during the day, in which case on 3 occasions in last couple of months he’s actually been sick at the end of the day at bedtime). He gets fuller quicker as well, and doesn’t want to move too much after eating.

This all started a couple of months ago - we’ve moved house across the country during this time so initially I thought it might be anxiety related but now I’m not so sure. We have visited A&E when he got one-side tummy pain and they felt his tummy and it seemed normal (pain was put down to irritated tummy glands from a chest infection, or trapped wind) but I’d be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks!

Is he constipated?

Aparecium · 17/08/2025 17:20

Is he putting on weight and growing?

Needlenardlenoo · 17/08/2025 17:35

Could possibly be a dairy allergy? I get in this sort of state with dairy unless I take lactase.

MummyEt · 17/08/2025 18:11

Thanks for your help everyone so far. No he’s not constipated (always very regular). He does seem to be putting on weight and growing but this has only been going on a couple of months so not sure how long that would take to show up clearly. He’s not appeared to have a problem with dairy before - can it appear suddenly?

Reflux, constipation, coeliacs disease, lactose intolerance - all potential reasons for these symptoms. All can start out of the blue believe me. I would see a GP about the symptoms.

swampwitch0 · 17/08/2025 19:36

Does he drink using straws much?
Could be trapped air

I’m sure this is unusual but my DC had this before they were diagnosed with cancer. Say it out loud to the GP and get them to examine DC.

Thank you, and I’m so sorry to hear about your DC. Do you mind me asking if they had any other symptoms, and what type of cancer it was?

Not eating. Not sleeping. But they were much younger (under 2). It was liver cancer. They are ok now btw.

I’m so glad they’re better! I’m so sorry you went through such an ordeal, and so thankful they came through it. Thank you so much for the information. We will definitely see the GP

We still haven’t got to the bottom of it. Wondering if it’s anxiety related due to moving across the country but still unsure.
we went to A&E recently due to sudden one-sided abdominal pain and told them
about this, and they didn’t think it was anything untoward - they had a good feel of his tummy and said it felt normal

id definitely try avoiding dairy for a while. A dairy or lactose intolerance can be triggered by a stomach bug. My eldest can be like this for periods of time. Initially we removed dairy then narrowed it down to lactose.
Pretty easy to go dairy free these days and helps instantly for us!

This might sound like a strange suggestion but you mention moving across country. Could you try him on bottled water for a few weeks and see if his tummy settles down? I grew up in a hard water area and when I visit family who live in a soft water area, their tap water wreaks havoc on my stomach/bowels so I stick to bottled.

Hi, sorry for jumping on but my DS is 6 and has suddenly developed this also. They mentioned Gastroenteritis and have sent a test off for H Pylori. Did you ever get to the bottom of it?

Hi! no we still haven’t got to the bottom of it - he still burps a lot before bed but it seems less severe than before so we are hoping it’s improving and wondering if it was maybe anxiety related due to moving across the country. I’d be really interested to hear if you get to the bottom of it too as it still plays on my mind!

Sorry he’s still suffering with it. My DS is definitely worse at bedtime, it’s constant. t’s definitely a strange one. The doc laughed when we took him in and said they had never seen it before. Not funny when it gets so bad that his starting to panic he can’t breath properly 🤦🏻‍♀️ His school friend was recently diagnosed with H.Pylori and it’s contagious which is why we asked for the test but waiting to hear back.

Not really but he does seem to be doing it a lot less so I wonder if it was anxiety. Have you had any developments with yours?
