Is my toddler drinking too much water?

So I can see online that the guidelines say roughly 8-32oz of liquid a day is the recommended amount however my 17 month old boy is dribking roughly 6 x 8oz bottles of water and 1 x 8oz bottles of milk, he eats 3 meals a day still and sometimes the odd snack, is this too much water ? As I understand its over the recommended by 2 bottles worth but should I see the GP or put it down to normal growth? Anyone else been in a similar situation? TIA

Is it baby bottles he's drinking?
Could you switch to a lidded cup instead?
It sounds an awful lot of liquid. He must be peeing all day!

Perhaps have him checked to rule out diabetes

HappySummerDays · 07/08/2025 17:36

That’s a lot of fluid - over 1.6 litres
Does he like sucking from a bottle?
Maybe switch to a cup and see what happens.
But read up on diabetes symptoms too.

Agree with PP and switch to water in a cup, he is likely enjoying comfort sucking on the bottle and doesn’t really want the water.
At 17 months he doesn’t need a bottle at all but I think mine were still having one at bedtime at that age, for comfort and to help them sleep!

Try a sippy cup instead in case it’s a comfort thing. If it continues see the GP.

I would get him checked out by the GP as that is excessive. If it’s a bottle change it to a cup now as can be a comfort thing.

I would just give milk in a bottle and find a cup for water. My little boy likes the Tumtum cup, it’s got a straw and he drinks easily from it.
He might like the comfort of the bottle more than he actually needs the water.

It is bottles as he refuses to drink through anything else, tried every type of cup etc and he just refuses and its summer for us at the moment so its warm, hes teething and I think he's going through a growth spurt, he is active all day too so I don't know if its a combination of things at the moment.

I leave his bottle for him and he grabs it and drinks it when he feels like it, we have tried all other cups etc he just refuses. He knows what he needs to do with them but he just throws them and wont drink from anything else

Thanks for the advise everyone, I have tried all different cups for him, open lid, closed lid, weighted straw cups etc he will put them near his mouth then just throw them and as its summer and temperature has been warm GP advised that its better if hes drinking than anything im going to limit his access to his bottle and leave a cup out for him and see how he goes Thanks again

I have read the other symptoms for this and he doesn't have any others, he is peeing more but with the fluid intake think thats expected otherwise he is still very active, no sickness and he a very happy and smiling

Have you tried the mam soft spouted trainer cup? It’s a mid point between bottles and a cup. But failing that I would offer the bottle at meal times only with no more than 4oz in there. In between leave a cup out and if he’s that thirsty enough he’ll drink from it, and you know he won’t be dehydrated because he’s still drinking from the bottle at meals.

Hi, I haven't heard of that one will give it a try and yes thats the plan to limit bottle intake and moniter his water and then go from there thanks 😊
