Prune pouch for constipation

August24Mama · 04/08/2025 23:05

So my 11 month old has been having a hard time pooping lately. Most of the time she poops she cries, gets all red faced, and clearly has a hard time.

I read that prune puree pouches are good, so I picked up one today. Just the aldi mamia one. Baby unexpectedly loved it, so I let her have the whole pouch. Now I'm worried it was too much, would this of caused her any harm? Am I to expect a huge poop explosion soon? Sorry if this is a dumb question I have PPA and didn't realise people usually gave it in smaller amounts, so now I'm a bit worried.

She will be fine. They wouldn't sell them if babies were not meant to eat them!

Thank you so much! I hate getting stressed over every little thing, thank you for some reassurance and here's hoping it helps her out in the poop department!

I have let mine have this quantity as this age with no issues. I don’t think it will cause a dramatic explosion either. My children liked them too - the one who was really bad with constipation as a baby, we tried everything. In the end she had lactulose and that worked. Prune pouches alone wouldn’t have worked but I liked having them in the cupboard for maintenance. Good luck! They are so much nicer than actual prunes.

My 10 month old loves them and regularly has the whole pouch as a snack if I’m out and about and he’s never exploded on me.

I was so surprised she liked it I think prunes are not nice haha, but I'm glad she enjoyed it. Thank you for the info! Gonna get some actual prunes and maybe give her some for maintenance like you said. Good call on the lactulose too, gonna pick some up if the prunes don't help. Thank you!

Thanks for the info I was getting flashbacks to the breastfed newborn poop explosions and I was mentally preparing myself 😂😂

A whole pouch doesn’t get my 8mo going so I am sure she will be fine xx

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 05/08/2025 12:19

She'll be fine. I still used prune pouches the very odd time my 4-5yo got constipated. There was never an explosion - it just moved things along a bit.

Update, no poop explosion but also hasn't gone poop, but she did 2 yesterday so might just not have any. Thanks for all the help!

I found that weaning constipation got far better once my LO drank more water. For weeks and weeks we had to restrict bananas and put half a sachet of prune into baby's cereal, but once they were drinking water over the summer, the constipation sorted itself out. Weetabix was also recommended to me by the health visitor for its ability to keep things moving 💩

My DD now 15 months also suffered with some constipation (fortunately seems to have resolved now, I think because their guts mature and they drink more water like a PP said) but we would always give her a pouch of prunes or pears and it usually helped move things along. Never resulted in an explosion though!
