2 year old drinking 2Litres a day

I have noticed recently that my 2 year old is drinking a lot. She is also leaking through most of her nappies. For the last 4 days she has woken up soaking wet and her bedding is wet also. I have changed her nappies to the next size up and that hasn't made any difference.

Over the last 2 days i have worked out she is drinking around 2 litres a day, sometimes more as we have caught her drinking from her brother’s juice bottle. She seems fine in herself.. playing like normal, eating like normal. She sometimes has a nap during the day.

Im thinking it may be habitual drinking which is leading to excessive urination. I wasn't too concerned until recently as she has always been a good drinker but just lately seems to be drinking more than ever.

Should i be concerned??

Yes, I would be concerned about diabetes and would call 111 or go straight to A&E

Letshavetea1 · 04/08/2025 10:29

I agree, not something to mess about with. She needs to be seen urgently today. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

BunfightBetty · 04/08/2025 10:29

Agree with pp, classic sign of diabetes, please get her seen today. If it’s not that, then great, but don’t hang around because if it’s the onset of type 1 diabetes it can become life threatening very quickly.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/08/2025 11:52

I’m a paediatric nurse. Please take her to A&E. They’d rather see her and it not be anything serious than wait and be very sick.

MêmePasPeur · 04/08/2025 12:12

A&E - as PP said, they’d rather send you home with nothing than see her very poorly

Thank you all so much for your comments.

Do you think it would be best to take her to A&E or get an appointment with our GP?
Just a question as she seems well in herself.

As a mum of a child with type 1 diabetes, those are the signs so I would want her blood glucose levels and urine checked.

DonnatellaLyman · 04/08/2025 16:16

Take her to A&e - they will be able to check faster and can initiate treatment if needed.

It’s 4.15. Surely it’s unlikely that you will get a GP appointment now.

DiscoBob · 04/08/2025 16:28

That is an unnaturally high amount for a little kid. As others say it could well be diabetes.
I hope you get her checked asap.

Skybluepinky · 04/08/2025 16:31

Straight to A&E to get checked out.
I assume you haven’t been giving her squash as it makes them thirsty and pee loads, don’t use a bigger nappy or it’ll leak, u need to change more often.

Thingsthatgo · 04/08/2025 16:34

If you are giving her juice or squash, it might be that she likes the sweet flavour. I would definitely get her checked out, but would also switch to water or milk only.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 04/08/2025 16:37

A&E today. I know you're thinking it can't possibly be anything serious and it'll just be a virus / she likes the sweet drink / a phase - and hopefully it will be - but if it is diabetes it could get very serious overnight - intensive care kind of serious. It's worth the hassle of A&E.

Too late now for GP, please go to A&E if you haven't already.

Letshavetea1 · 04/08/2025 20:00

How much more encouragement do you need to take her urgently to A&E? We’ve all been politely saying this all day? The symptoms she has can quickly escalate.
Many of us on here will be medically trained or have children with type on diabetes. Things escalate quickly from a well child to a seriously ill one.

A lot of adults struggle to drink that much so it’s unuusal
for a child to be drinking that much.

fthisfthatfeverything · 04/08/2025 20:21

How did you get on OP?

Jjc23 · 05/08/2025 18:37

I just want to say thank you all for your advice.

And sorry for the late update..
We took her to A&E last night, her blood sugar was slightly elevated but the doctor said it wasn’t high enough to diagnose her with diabetes. She also had glucose in her urine. We have been referred for further testing and have been told to keep a close eye on her symptoms. There is a high possibility that she will develop it in the future.
