Hi, my 7yo started complaining of a sore stomach on Monday. By Tuesday evening she was experiencing waves of intense pain in the centre of her stomach above her belly button that has her doubled over, screaming in pain, and in panic, once it wore off she went to sleep and slept the whole night. Woke up Wednesday and every 45 mins to an hour she having these intense pains again. I took her to the gp who sent us to a&e. A&e concluded it’s a viral that is causing the cause lympnodes glands in her stomach to swell causing the pain - he called it mesenteric adenitis - he said it will clear on its own with the viral clearing.

friday I took her back to the gp as no improvement they took obs which were fine and said given she has no other symptoms I.e fever, vomiting, diarrhea etc that it’s just viral and she will be fine.

she is still experiencing these excruciating waves of pain and has woke up twice in the last hour screaming but once it wears off she’s back to sleep.

has anyone’s child experienced this from a viral? I’m extremely worried and upset seeing her in this much pain and feeling useless

Give her soft foods such as yoghurt and avoid food that takes longer to digest such as meat.

Is she pooing normally? If not I’d be concerned about a blockage.

My son was like this. After a number of GP trips, 111 calls and an A&E admission it came to light he had an impacted colon. Was on IV drip, then medication for 6 months.

Yes this would be my worry too. I think she needs to see a Dr again

My ds had the same, was admitted with suspected appendicitis which turned out to be impaction. It came out of the blue, he was in so much pain I couldn't even touch him. He was given an enema & I have never seen so much poo come from one child, he completely filled the toilet & was still going the next day. He went from being grey, sweating, writhing in pain to asking for a McDonalds drive through on the way home in the space of 45 minutes. His constipation was linked to his autism, apparently it is very common, he was put on the sachets to keep things moving & whilst sometimes getting a bit bunged up since thankfully was never so poorly again.

Yes my ds was on and off for a while. The put it down to him being unwell and not drinking because he had a sore throat and cough, thebn was on antibiotics. So this caused dehydration. He picked up his eating for a bit but not the drinking. He was still poohing through these severe bouts of pain where he would be writhing around in agony. Calpol wasnt touching the pain. He couldnt sleep would would be screaming. He was 8 heard old amd shouting out "mummy help me, why cant you help me". It was heartbreaking.

Thank you for all your replies. While she is still complaining of a sore stomach she said it isn’t too uncomfortable but she just wants to lay on the sofa which is very unlike her. She has just passed a large stool which is pale in colour and has specks of blood in it. I’m currently waiting on the phone to 111 for advice.

I think as she's got a new symptom including blood in the stool, it might just be best to go back to A&E. I suspect that's what 111 would/should tell you.
