Would you go to A&E?

1.5 hour into a 6 hour potential wait for out of hours GP call back from 111.

Child had surgery 1.5 weeks ago, has a reasonably sized seroma we've been discussing with the dressing team. Yesterday they said if anything escalates over the weekend go to A&E, or call the ward for advise.

Today there's an awful smell coming from the wound. Plus they're in more pain.

Spoke to the ward who said try 111 which we did. But now we're waiting anyway and if they call at bedtime with an appointment it's pretty miserable for all involved.

Never had to deal with 111 before so no idea if 6 hours is worst case.

If we go to A&E her doctors are are available at that hospital, out of hours clinic they wouldn't. Doesn't feel like life or death for A&E though, though a surgical complications could be v serious. & we were advised to go if needed yesterday. Would you go or hold tight waiting for 111?

No idea how the doctors strikes are affecting either service.

Go to A and E. It’s clearly infected and he needs antibiotics. Assuming you don’t have minor injuries?

Takes tablet, cuddly toys and other distractions, pain killers and a packed dinner. A and E will be staffed by senior doctors and some times they have less people attending when there are strikes but it’s Saturday so go sooner rather later.

i would go to a&e especially if pain has increased and there is a smell. It’s sounds like it’s definitely infected so it important to get it treated quickly.
Senior dr are covering a&e.
Definitely go to a&e if she gets unwell or has a temperature.

A&E. Suspect you may need IV antibiotics and possibly drainage.

Lougle · 26/07/2025 15:17

Smell and pain is A&E.

BettySweaty · 26/07/2025 15:29

A&E. As soon as you can.

We're waiting now, thank you all. Still no 111 call back

Hopefully he gets treatment soon. Our local ambulance service is reporting that 111 call handlers have been diverted to taking 999 calls. It must be a busy weekend.

I would go to a minor injuries or urgent treatment centre if you have one near you, if not A&E

They won't want to touch a post-surgical wound in a child, I don't think. This is definitely an A&E one if there is no open access to the paediatric ward.

Splendiddydody · 26/07/2025 16:22

Definitely A & E, that wound is infected and needs urgent treatment.

Wirdle · 26/07/2025 18:53

Well after 6 hours I got a text from 111 saying they're too busy and they've closed the case so try your GP on Monday...
Meanwhile we've been well looked after in a&e and DCs specialists have come down too. So I'm very glad I listened to all your advise to come in!
