Could it be worms?

So this is going to contain TMI, sorry! But I'm a desperate mum. I know worms are associated with children and i have 3 little ones all under 7.

but it's not them, it's me! I have what I can only describe as intense itching!!! It's not all the time but, man alive, when I've had a cheeky scratch hoping it'll just sooth the tingle, I can't stop. It's awful. It's day and night, worse in the night but only because I can't get back to sleep when it's started. Also worse after wiping. Starting off just my bum and perenium and now also feels like my vj too.

Ive been to the drs. It's not hemmeroids, a fissure, thrush or bacterial vaginosis. The dr gave me canestan anyway and I have a follow up next week to see if it's settled. In the meantime I've bought anusol which has a cortisoid in. This soothe and stops the itching for a while but doesn't get rid.

ive just bought some worming treatment because it's the only thing I haven't tried. But could it really be worms if there's only me itching? Anyone have any suggestions?

probs wrong place to put this on children's health but I'm writing this whilst trying to make brekkie for two littles.

thanks in advance!

If you had worms the first indication is you would see them. When you go to the GP next they need to do a swab and send it away to find out exactly what’s going on. I always find Sudocream is best for itchiness, do you use non bio washing powder.

Take the meds, follow the instructions to the letter by reading the package insert. If you get better you will know the answer.
Check the dc.
Have you changed washing powder or anything?

Guaranteed it's worms. The same thing happened to me 2 years ago, neither child was affected or showing symptoms etc I let it go on for ages thinking there's no way it's worms, I DO have piles was using anusol cream like it was going out of fashion. Eventually went to pharmacist who gave me the worm medicine, took it, it's just one dose, 36 hrs later itching gone. I was so shocked 😂 and yes they can make your vagina itch too. And you don't "HAVE to see them" - I never saw a thing that was remotely suspicious!

Yep, I’ve had worms too. I didn’t see them but had the intense itching. It could come on quite suddenly too. I think I might have caught it from the cat who hadn’t been wormed for a while ( and who catches lots of mice). You have to treat the whole family, hoover, wash the bedding on a hot cycle etc

Thanks all!!! I've ruled out everything else - changes to soap, washing powders etc. Worms is literally the only thing left that I can think of or that google comes up with. I've taken the medicine. Would you advise giving it to all family too even though I'm the only one itching??? I have no visible signs of worms and neither do the kids. About to put bedding on a hot wash! Will vaccuum the beds and bedroom later! @Realisation14 - interesting to know it took 36 hours to stop the itching! I've become a bit down this afternoon when there is no change... but I'll try to relax and wait and see if it works. Fingers crossed! Xxxx

It sounds like worms. Just to dispel untruths. You can't get them from your cat or dog. So it's likely the kids could have them too. Treat everyone

TouchOfSilverShampoo · 23/07/2025 15:40

If it’s worms you need to treat everyone, and again two weeks later. And keep washing all towels and bedding on a hot wash, Hoover and damp dust and sleep in pants. Cut nails short (especially on kids).

if you can’t tell I’ve been there with my brood - it’s a huge pain in the ass (pun not intended) because if you don’t follow the hygiene practise you’ll just reinfect yourself.

Right... 2 of 3 kids taken the medicine too. One I'll have to book a drs appt because she's only 15 months. Husband can take it after work. I've just hoovered the beds and bagged up the laundry that was on the floor! Need to hoover the floor and hot wash towels next! Goodness me. What a mess. Although it's giving me a kick to have a ruthless clear out of junk upstairs too! Thank you all for your advice! Will let you know how we get on over the next few days.
