Bruises on 5 year old legs

I understand children get a lot of bruises on them. This is also my third child!
A few weeks ago I noticed my 5 year old had a lot of bruises on his legs. I thought I would see what happens. Today I noticed lots more bruises. He doesn't know how they got there ( I know sometimes we hurt ourselves and forget). I also asked if someone at school was hurting him but he says no. They tend to be on the front of his legs.
I might seem over protective but I'm worried about Leukemia as a common symptom is bruising with no explanation.
How do I know the difference?
TIA!

To me that looks normal if I'm honest. Do you worry about any other symptoms.

Ornamentalcabbages · 21/07/2025 19:42

Honestly, this is completely normal. Kids bump and bruise themselves so easily just playing. It is not like they'll have clattered into something seriously enough to recollect the incident!

Front of shins especially are prone to bumping into benches, blocks, stairs, seats, and anything they kneel down on... Seriously, it won't be an issue.

How do his upper legs look?

Pretty much all kids of this age are going to have bruises on their lower legs but I'm sure I remember reading that it would be more worrying if they're somewhere less easily explained than general knocks.

Both of mine constantly look like this they just bang themselves and just forget about it

BodenCardiganNot · 21/07/2025 20:32

Is he bruising anywhere else? Or just legs?
I know how you feel - we have had experience of leukemia in our family.

Climbing and football but it is worth keeping an eye on it to make sure they don’t bruise too easily

Mumoftwo2022 · 21/07/2025 20:46

My 5 year old girls legs are covered in bruises , worse than this to be fair.

PopThatBench · 21/07/2025 20:50

They look like normal bruises but keep an eye on it and any other symptoms.
I had a leukaemia scare, my bruises were a deep purple and painless (I had lots of other symptoms as well) and my GP rushed me through to hospital. It turned out I was depressed and trying to mask it so my body came out with physical symptoms 👌🏻
Monitor your child for a week or two and if you’re still not happy maybe a trip to the GP? It could be that he bruises easily.

SoMentallyDrained · 21/07/2025 22:36

My child had awfully bruised legs in the weeks after they learnt to cycle, it was the pedals knocking the shins

ninjahamster · 21/07/2025 22:45

When my daughter had a leukaemia scare, the bruises were HUGE. Also really purple and black.

SummerFeverVenice · 21/07/2025 22:47

It’s just a simple and cheap blood test to rule out leukaemia.
Just go to the GP and ask.

TheMoonIsWensleydale · 21/07/2025 22:53

The bruising in leukaemia are massive and really dark purple, they look like a hickey (if you remember them 🤣) really it’s exactly like bleeding under the skin, really livid. They’re unmistakably different. These just look like 5yr old bruises

Thank you everyone for replies and sharing experiences.

I will just keep an eye on them, he is a very happy and active child.

I have a very active boy and his legs are much worse than this. I wouldn’t be worried if I were you
