Birth certificate needed for high street vaccine?

Has anyone's child received a vaccine from Superdrug WITHOUT being asked to show a birth certificate in the appointment? Did the practitioner accept any other form of evidence? Have you experienced any difficulties in accessing vaccine treatment on the basis of not producing a birth certificate in the appointment? If you are comfortable please include if the child is biologically related to you regardless if you were or were not asked for proof of parental responsibility.

I’d guess it’s because they need to see that you have parental responsibility. So then they’d need your ID too to know you are who you say you are? Anyway, what other proof of parental responsibility is there, that you could provide?

I forgot DD’s red book for her second CP vax at Superdrug and they did it but I had to get DH to text me photos of the relevant pages. So I’m not sure they’d waive the official docs I’m afraid!

Why are you asking?

Stormsabrewing · 20/07/2025 08:16

Your OP is really concerning. Anywhere that does a vaccination without checking PR would be massively unethical.

Loudspeaker1 · 20/07/2025 09:01

If you've been asked to show evidence such as a birth certificate in the appointment please consider participating in poll to explore consistency in practice.

Agreed.

The birth certificate is to show you have parental responsibility for the child and should be the bare minimum alongside checking your ID matches.

Why wouldn't you want to be asked to show evidence that you have PR for the child being vaccinated?

Why? Is this research?

Loudspeaker1 · 20/07/2025 09:42

Thank you for you comments this is all really helpful to explore consistency of practice and safeguarding. I'd be really interested in your personal experiences. The point about requiring ID is very helpful to go with a birth certificate so if anyone was asked for ID or not asked for ID I'd be grateful to hear your experience. Thank you so much for your engagement.

To be clear this isn't for academic research but to understand consistency of practice.

You still haven’t said why you want to know.

CatRescueNeeded · 20/07/2025 09:55

What happened? Did someone without parental responsibility get your DC vaccinated at Superdrug? If so then you need advise on how to escalate this very serious issue rather than fanning about with polls

Latenightreader · 20/07/2025 09:55

If you 'want to understand the consistency of practice' surely you need a more comprehensive study than asking a few parents online?

Did AI help you write the posts? It doesn't read like a concerned parent and I am not surprised people are questioning your motives.

Loudspeaker1 · 20/07/2025 12:59

You are totally right about the shortcomings of an online poll. This poll simply indicates whether or not there may be inconsistent practice based upon self reporting (it is in the public interest to examine the use of discretion in healthcare settings). If there are inconsistencies then it simply suggests that there maybe something here worth investigating further (with more consistent methods and resources). If there aren't inconsistencies in self reported experiences then it suggests committing wider resources to this question may not be required.
