Blackheads around 10 year olds nose HELP

Itsmeee55 · 18/07/2025 23:12

I’ve noticed my daughter has quite a few black heads all around her nose recently shes ten. Is this normal or am I over thinking it? Does anyone know what sort of skin care I could use to try and get rid? Obviously with younger skin I really don’t want to irritate or damage it as she suffers with a lot of eczema. She washes her face every night already so we obviously need something else😄

benzoyl peroxide might help? You can buy this over the counter I think. Take care with it though, from memory I think it might be quite drying to the skin too.

Plibble · 19/07/2025 00:12

It’s completely normal. You should teach her to wash her face properly using a flannel and a cleanser - I think adolescents don’t spent enough time (gently) working cleansers over their faces and into problem areas, and possibly also some sort of very gentle exfoliation, although a non fabric-softened flannel may be enough. The 31st state products, while aimed at boys, are very good according to my daughters.

blackheads or sebaceous filaments?
wash
exfoliate
toner or lotion with salicylic acid
cerave products are gentle

Surely the first question is whether it’s bothering her?

a 10 yr old is too immature to fully understand of all aspects of self care.
would you say the same thing regarding plaque build up and the need to floss?
or the beginnings of body odor?
it's a parents responsibility to teach skin care the same as dental/hair or period care.

Or to make them obsess unhealthily about the most minute or imaginary imperfection.

teaching a child the right way to wash her face during the tween and beyond phase is hardly obsessing no more so than teaching the right way to brush your teeth or hair.

cheesycheesy · 19/07/2025 09:44

Washing your face wont get rid of blackheads, but it might help get rid of oil to prevent further. If they’re bothering her you’d need the nose strips or to extract them. Helping your child wash her face isn’t unhealthy. I’m glad my mum helped me with stuff like that, along with deodorant etc.

DC used the Clean & Clear blackhead scrub/daily scrub at that age (as did I decades before - still do occasionally tbh!).

CherryRipe1 · 19/07/2025 10:21

Those blackhead nose strips are brilliant, wet, wait until dry then pull off. The results are fascinating, like a micro forest.

0BSESSED · 19/07/2025 10:22

God I hate parents obsessing over stuff that the kid hadn’t realised was a problem

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 19/07/2025 10:51

Warm face cloth before cleanser

And maybe a tween facial as a treat?

0BSESSED · 19/07/2025 11:02

You know blokes don’t use cleanser right? Why are we teaching them they have to do all this stuff?

Definitelynotem · 19/07/2025 11:08

if they’re sebaceous filaments then try salicylic acid but I wouldn’t want to be giving a 10 year old a complex. You can’t really get rid of them, I’ve had them all my life

Definitelynotem · 19/07/2025 11:09

Blackheads aren’t due to not washing your face btw

Blueuggboots · 19/07/2025 11:11

@0BSESSED- my 14 year old son uses cleanser and serums?! What a ridiculously sexist post!

But you can help with them by exfoliating and washing

SaintGermain · 19/07/2025 12:07

Use a baby tooth brush to work up a lather using a salicylic acid face wash to clean the area. Pat dry and use a cotton pad with witch hazel on the freshly cleaned pores around her nose. It may tingle but it doesn’t hurt.

I think you’re missing the point. If you lived on a desert island you wouldnt give a crap about this. Society tells you you need it. I’ve never used a cleanser and I feel quite sure I look the same as everyone else. Stop making your children worried about their appearance

BreakingBroken · 19/07/2025 23:09

but the island is far from deserted and outward appearance is the first thing people will notice about you; hair, skin, and teeth very important for first impressions.

IShouldNotCoco · 19/07/2025 23:10

Dermalogica clear start black head mask is great.

You need to wash your face with something though, that’s just basic hygiene whether the OP gets a soap or a gentle cleanser or a gel

Just wait until and unless she raises it.
