Kids magnesium glycinate gummies contained undeclared melatonin

Have just read this article from the guardian published at the end of June after searching for these gummies and found they’d been taken off Amazon…

My kids (12 and 14) both had trouble sleeping and as I take magnesium at night and find it helps thought I’d give them some too. They only had 30days worth and they really helped, so we ran out last week to the point they are both asking for them again hence the search…

I feel awful that I’ve basically given drugs to my kids, I know they have not had them long term but are there any side effects this could have had? My daughter has been especially moody during taking them and in the last week of not having them has been easily emotional/anxious, which we had been commenting might be her age with menstruation likely starting soonish, the heat and end of term tiredness (which I’m not ruling out could still be the reasons!!)

The article says the MHRA are investigating so I guess we’ll find out more when those results are published… on one hand I feel completely outraged that this could have happened and what effect this had on my kids, I know Amazon is not responsible for testing its products but makes me wonder what other crap is put into supplements on their?? Assuming the MHRA conclude they did have melatonin in then surely there should be a huge sanction for Amazon or is responsibility with the company selling them via Amazon? and I’d at least expect to get an apology and be informed of the investigation outcome as a customer

on the other hand they did actually really help my kids to get a good nights sleep!!

has anyone else been accidentally been drugging their kids?! 😬

Lots and I mean lots of people give their kids melatonin anyway so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s awful that they’ve done this though. I tried dd on magnesium night time gummies but they seemed to cause nightmares so I stopped. I take 12mg of melatonin myself every night. No side effects.

Its obviously bad that it wasn't declared on the label, but honestly its available for children OTC in many countries, I wouldnt worry that they've come to harm by having them. It's an interesting point about liability, amazon is a platform for people to sell but cannot reasonably send every product off to the lab to check that the ingredients are correctly listed- id be surprised if there wasn't a caveat for sellers stating they are liable. Lesson is to buy supplements and meds in a real life pharmacy!

Thanks both, I was aware that melatonin is OTC in other counties- it is reassuring and had wondered about whether it would actually be something to look into if the magnesium hadn’t worked… and now I know why it DID work! 😂 I just never really looked into it that far to work out if it was a good idea to pursue a prescription!

will buy some reputable magnesium and see how we get on with that. Def no more supplements from Amazon, but there were some checks listed on the ad that made it sound legit!

You can buy melantonin from the chemist in Spain and US over the counter x

I took 3 mg of melatonin for years and had no ill effects when I stopped taking it

Yes I gave these to my sons for over a year in the daytime as part of their normal supplements ( no mention of sleep etc on them so I didn’t know to give at night) and of course we were having terrible night bedtime etc. and started prescription melatonin at night which helped the last few weeks but it means that they’ve had more melatonin than they’ve need and also for a year melatonin in the daytime so no doubt about screwed up their production!

anon2022anon · 03/08/2025 20:34

We also gave these, and I've got to say we miss them! My concern isn't that they have melatonin in, but that they haven't listed that they have it in/ what dosage, so who knows what else there is in them.

Has anyone found any replacement magnesium gummies that are worth buying? Or has it swayed anyone else to ordering melatonin?
