My 4 yo got chicken pox just over 3 weeks ago. I thought my 2nd would have caught it as they've been sharing drinks, baths, cuddles you name it. however my 1 year old didn't get it and it's been 3 weeks and 1 day. Is this normal??

They may have caught it first or afterwards with no symptoms. My friend only found out she had had chicken pox when her wisdom teeth came through with scarring!

My youngest didn't get it from her sister, playgroup or Nursery she caught it at 22 from volunteering to help at a kids party !

My brother caught chicken pox and I never appeared to. I am a primary school teacher do have been exposed repeatedly for 3 decades; not caught it. My DC have both caught it twice! Once before COVID and once after.

However, DD1 had 2 spots on her ankle the first time with a temperature and seemingly generally poorly. Was I the same when my brother caught it but my parents didn’t connect the dots? Who knows?

Mine didn't catch it from each other despite being stuck inside together. My younger child had it first, the older one didn't get it until the following year.

Notaripoff · 12/07/2025 15:05

My eldest didn't catch from my youngest and as far as I know has never had it.

sesquipedalian · 12/07/2025 15:05

My DS never caught chicken pox: all his sisters had it. These days, I would undoubtedly have paid for the chicken pox vaccine - one of my daughters has a scar to this day on her nose where she scratched it when she had chicken pox.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 12/07/2025 15:06

Thanks all! I'm not worried just kinda expected him to get it!

He did have 1 spot on his tongue before the eldest had chicken pox, it was sore and now he has a dint/ scar on his tongue where it was. i presumed it was a little ulcer from where his new tooth was coming it, perhaps it was chicken pox or maybe he wasn't and heel catch it down the line...who knows!

Some people never get it. My DD didn't and neither did her grandmother.

I didn't get it from my sister. Dm said she put us together as much as possible in the hope I'd get it.
I also didn't get it from my best friend at primary school, nor the girl i sat next to for maths at secondary, nor the multiple times it went round school. I didn't even get it when one went round that got several people for the second time...

I got it at uni aged 20, when I knew no one else who had it. I must have caught it from someone walking past outside college, so not even someone I'd spent time with. I had it really badly, but didn't manage to give it to anyone either.

ooooohlala · 12/07/2025 19:51

My brother had it really badly - spots from head to toe.

I had it moderately badly.

My cousin (who we lived with) had literally one spot. DM says she would never have noticed it had she not been on the alert thanks to the rest of us having it.

It’s possible your little one has / has had it, and been fine with it.

Anonycat · 12/07/2025 19:54

My brother didn’t get chicken pox as a child when my sister and I had it, or later when his own children had it.

He got it when he was about 45 - never found out who he caught it from.

Superscientist · 12/07/2025 19:56

My sister was exposed repeatedly in childhood but didn't get chicken pox until 16 when she became immunosuppressed. She had the flu, tonsillitis, glandular fever and chickenpox back to back.

Pottingup · 12/07/2025 19:57

My youngest was a baby when DS2 had chickenpox and he just had one tiny blister that I wasn’t completely sure was CP. A few years later he got shingles though - so he must have had it. I read that it’s more common to get shingles as a child if you’ve had very mild CP.

Mumofteenandtween · 12/07/2025 20:01

My brother got it about 5 weeks after me. A family friend had it in between us. How that worked we never figured out…. Somehow I was infectious enough to pass onto him in one afternoon but not infectious enough to pass to DB whom I was with all the time. And then a couple of weeks later DB was susceptible enough to get it off him.

A great mystery of our lives!

magicpant · 12/07/2025 20:04

Normal I would say. None of mine caught it from each other, but they did independently and DS3 had it twice.

DontCallMeBaby · 12/07/2025 20:16

My brother and I had it totally separate as children, despite at least one of us getting it at an age when we still shared baths etc. DD is an only, so no sibling stories there, but she had quite a lot of exposure through nursery before catching it eventually.

My mum NEVER had it. Obviously looked after me and DB when we had it, and had DD when she had it (yes I did ask multiple times if she was sure …) Always wondered if she had some weird natural immunity that got watered down with the generations.

Lockdownbaby2021 · 12/07/2025 22:56

wow so many interesting stories! my youngest seems to catch any illness going, in fact he was in hospital at 8 weeks with a UTI and covid (at the same time) and they ran some bloods and they said his white blood cells were low. since then he's caught every bug going. so I was mentally preparing myself for him to get it rough. so far, nothing. unless it was that little sore spot on his tongue. Even if it was just the 1 spot I still can't relax thinking he won't get it again down the line..

This happened with ours. I assumed he must have got immunity and not reacted, but he caught it 2 years later at school and had it badly so presumably no immunity.
Not sure how he didn't catch it off DC1 as they had mixed up drink cups and shared a bath when the first couple of spots were there as I only noticed part way through the bath.
