Baby temperature of 40…

OneKhakiDreamer · 08/07/2025 16:48

My LO (8 month old) has a temp of 40 came on suddenly very sad given paracetamol taken an hour to come down to 39.4 so wondering if people think it’s come down enough to monitor at home? Any other suggestions to help manage or advice.

he’s just fallen asleep on me but apart from crying they seem ok no rash or no like trouble breathing etc but just as its staying so high the temp is my worry and wonder if I should stick to see if it goes away in next few days before contacting doctor or

Thanks in advance for any advice

Ours turned up for an out of hours gp appointment organised through 111 and with 40 degree temperature we were sent to the hospital so they could run tests and get his temp down. It turned out to be strep throat. I’m glad it’s come down but he did need antibiotics. I would ring the gp in the morning or 111 if he’s poorly again in the meantime.

So originally we were put on amoxicillin 3.5 days later temp still high another doctor said we should be on penicillin now 60+ hours since first dose of the new antibiotic still temps of 40+ just now 40.3
I feel so frustrated I didn’t push for a swab or more testing but my LO was like a different child we were in and out within an hour so thankful for that but as was in between doses of Calpol they didn’t get to see the majority of how’s he’s been or get the temp numbers we get soon as meds wear off! He did mention to not even use Calpol and let temp run its course but I’m scared what would happen if we did. He said use of in discomfort which is why we are mainly as he is not a happy bunny when we are hitting the 40 region.
also as he was a consultant I felt i couldn’t really question but everything I see is viral wouldn’t last this long. Trying hardest to no Google but struggling with lack of sleep also to stay sane!

Keep pushing them over and over, especially has his temp had barely dropped. Doesn’t matter if they are a consultant, you are his mum, you know something isn’t right. For a temperature that high for that long, I’m surprised he’s not been admitted to hospital and I’d be taking him to a&e if your own dr proves useless.

I would really urge you to get a second opinion here. It is your right to ask for one and I’d be seriously considered of a child with a temp over 40 for this long- almost a week- when antibiotics given don’t seem to be hitting it.

OneKhakiDreamer · 15/07/2025 07:15

Finally after an entire week his temperature dropped right down to 35.7 at about 5 this morning we cuddled him and put duvet round us and now seems normal he’s still sleeping but I feel like we could have reached a turning point fingers crossed!!

I don't want to be alarmist but a too low temperature can also be a sign of being quite poorly so please keep an eye on how he is in himself and if you're at all worried - even if it's just a 'spidey sense' thing - please get him checked again.

Coffeeandcrochet · 15/07/2025 07:40

Other things to look out for:

No interest in normal activities
Hard to wake
Pale or blotchy skin
Tugging or grunting when breathing
Fast breathing
Lack of wee
No interest in milk
High pitched cry
Vomiting
Shivering

No doctor will ever mind seeing such a wee one and they'd rather see a hundred who are just fine then miss one who isn't.

ok, after 3 years of tonsillitis battles, and I mean almost every month from 7 months, Phenoxymethylpenicillin is what is best for 5-10 days.
temps will go up and down. Sorry don’t know why the text has changed like this. Keep giving Calpol because high temperatures can cause a seizures you’ve been given some seriously bad advice. I’ve been under ENT specialists. I do genuinely know what I’m talking about. My daughter had to have her removed due to danger of life. Sometimes we’ve had Doctors not fully grasping tonsillitis and we’ve been given the wrong antibiotics which landed us in A&E, very surprised at the care you have been given.

35.7? That is low. After such a high temperature for so long I’d be wary of sepsis with that temperature.

we had this with my eldest his temp dropped right down and we were petrified it could be sepsis as was after a bad time of high temps but thankfully it turned out was the turning point. Just keeping an eye but he seems ok in himself at minute. Just hoping today is the day we don’t reach The 39/40 mark in temps.
very very tired parents now on day 8 of this illness poor little one not even started nursery yet!

The high temp is back well 39.2. Trying to remain positive as it’s been about 8/9 hours since last high temp which is longest respite we’ve had in now over a week. He’s gone for a nap once he wakes might try get a second opinion although consultant said to wait another 48 hours… so have 24 hours to monitor.

Are you still carrying on with pen v antibiotics? Sorry to hear the temp is back :(

cannynotsay · 15/07/2025 14:10

this baby should be on antibiotics with tonsillitis if it’s bacterial, I would seek secondary opinion it’s been too many days off high temps

pls see my earlier post

cannynotsay · 16/07/2025 10:12

How are you guys getting on? Any improvements hope baby is ok xx
