Hi - my child (18 months) has one of these in her mouth. I think I got it out but can't be sure he didn't eat any. Is this poisonous - what should I do ?

They seem fine - it didn't cause them any discomfort/ didnt seem like they disliked the taste.

That's Lords and Ladies. Call 111.

Trallers · 07/07/2025 23:55

I have no idea what it is so on that basis would probably be making my way to a&e as some red berries are very poisonous. That's probbaly way more dramatic than needed, but better safe than sorry.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 07/07/2025 23:56

Yes they are poisonous and you need medical advice. I'm sure it'll be OK but take it seriously.

TheWittySloth · 08/07/2025 00:08

Thanks all. We are in france so cannot call 111. She is sleeping (seems absolutely fine) so thinking it's probably okay (she has no issues with mouth or breathing. We will monitor super closely.

DS did something similar and was quite unwell (gastric issues) including diarrhoea for 5 days

BertieBotts · 08/07/2025 00:09

Do you have an open pharmacy? I would take the berries there. If they are not able to identify them, take the berries and child to an emergency department.

Given the hour and daylight photo, I assume you're not in the UK? You might have a poison control helpline or your health insurance might have an advice line to call.

Yes @TheWittySloth it is this, also known as Cuckoo pint, poisonous so please get DC checked out

Haggisfish3 · 08/07/2025 00:24

It’s really important you get your child checked out. Those are very toxic.

Nchangeo · 08/07/2025 01:01

You might want to get the Latin for this as the common names won’t translate in French. Common uk varieties are Arum maculatum and Arum italicum. If you can still see the leaves they are quite different for the above varieties so easily identifiable. However the leaves usually disappear at flowering time.

Either way immediate medical attention! I wouldn’t wait on that one

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 08/07/2025 01:23

French Pharmacy will definitely advise with the photo. Definitely needs checking.

Okayornot · 08/07/2025 02:08

In France you should speak to a pharmacist asap.

Isitreallysohard · 08/07/2025 02:12

Ffs. They have 111 in France, google it. What is wrong with you.

TourdeFrance2025 · 08/07/2025 05:43

How is she now? Did you get to a pharmacy/hospital?

igglepigglegingin · 08/07/2025 06:52

OP I'm not sure by posting you were looking for confirmation that you dont need to worry or wake up your DC.
In the same way that you posted about the berries, you knew something might be wrong, you've had lots of people tell you the same.

She might be sleeping but that's irrelevant.

Take her in.

FanofLeaves · 08/07/2025 06:57

Saying you were not in the U.K. might be relevant for the opening post! Anyway, presumably they have somewhere you can access medical treatment in France?!

Treesarenotforeating · 08/07/2025 07:40

The whole plant is poisonous, you need to get advice

Surelythistime · 08/07/2025 07:44

Why on earth bother posting? If you’re just going to ignore advice.
