5 year old tunny troubles

DD has complained about stomach pain on and off for over a year. She points to her belly button and says that eating makes it worse.

We have been to the doctor about this and also a urination urgency. Dr suggested that both could be from constipation and this does make sense as it tends to be worse in the summer when dehydration is an issue.

Unfortunately she isn't a very reliable reporter so I don't know what to think and I do wonder if some of is made up.

We have been given constipation treatment which helped a bit. We've gone and had an ultrasound, nothing found.

I wonder if it's gluten or dairy intolerance but we can't eliminate that as school won't limit what she eats without a diagnosis.

I'm planning to go to the Dr again once holidays start and we can observe her diet more.

Anyone experienced similar?

I should say that there is quite a lot of food sensitivity in the family. Onions, garlic, peppers, I'm gluten sensitive, dds grandmother is allergic to hazelnuts etc.

I also have a sensitive 'lower' area anyway. I can feel myself ovulation for example and get general gut pain before a big poo (tmi) but I don't want to dismiss it as general female pain in case it's more serious.

A few thoughts...

My DD had tummy pain for months on end. It magically disappeared when she changed schools. Lots of the kids were worrying about school due to a grumpy teacher. DD hadn't talked about it but I think the tummy pain was how it manifested in her.

Apparently it's common in young children for tummy pain to be caused by worrying.

If your DD is prone to constipation, has the GP suggested anything for this? Have you tried upping her fruit and veg? Not just for the fibre but because these foods also contain a lot of water so will help with dehydration.

Generally my DD is only offered water to drink but in really hot weather I do give her a glass of cordial just to get an additional drink into her as she doesn't naturally drink a lot and I worry about dehydration.

I understand your considering whether a particular food might be responsible. I've got tons of allergies and intolerances. My DD is outgrowing allergies to milk and eggs.

However, I definitely wouldn't reduce or remove anything from her diet without skin-prick testing done properly to test for reactions to these things.

If DD or I eat something our body can't tolerate, it gives us fairly obvious symptoms quite quickly. I know that gluten intolerance can be trickier to pinpoint but if you do manage to get your DD tested for it it's imperative that she hasn't already reduced it in her diet. I would strongly advocate for a referral to the allergy clinic which hopefully the GP will do if you are getting to the point of considering removing foods.
