Had a look this evening after brushing his teeth as for the last week or so he's been saying it hurts when I try to brush on that side of his mouth. Couldn't believe what I saw! That definitely wasn't there before.

The chip on his front tooth happened quite a while ago and he did bash his gum hard too, as it bled at the time.

I'll be ringing the dentist in the morning, but now I'll be worrying all night. 😢 so in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas as to what this is?

Unfortunately it looks like that baby incisor -URA -is now non-vital /dead, post that trauma and that gingival lesion looks like a draining sinus OP.

Oh my gosh, will that toothneed to be removed? Feeling absolutely awful for letting this happen. He's 2!

Thank you for your help - I've never heard of that.

Toddlers traumatising their deciduous incisors when they are learning to walk is a really common childhood accident, so please don’t jump to blaming yourself. It does look as if there is chronic infection going on in that area, so together with the discomfort your little boy is experiencing (pain during brushing), he probably will need an extraction. Antibiotics will only dampen symptoms not address the underlying issue (am not able to say whether antibiotics are necessary without examining, and, those are only usually prescribed when the face is swollen etc). Antibiotics will do nothing for a chronic sinus such as in your photo, if that is your son’s only symptom.
Chronically infected deciduous teeth can also affect the underlying developing permanent tooth bud, depending on the child’s age.
Try not to worry OP and please don’t feel guilty, this type of accident happens to lots of little toddlers, and the subsequent pirate look is only for a few years until the adult incisor erupts. Good luck.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge and for the kind words too.

I've been worried sick all night. Just waiting for the dentist to open at 9.

DGD is behaving out of character! She’s defiant has just turned six and is highly intelligent! She is becoming defiant testing every boundary and screaming uncontrollably when denied her wishes. Help 🙏
