Apologies for the clunky title, I wasn't really sure what to put.
DS is 13, he's always been one of the smallest in the class and his height has generally tracked close to the 2nd percentile since he was about 7 (using the height graph in the red book).
He is currently 138.5cm and his last 2 height measuments have been below the 2nd percentile.
I took him to the GP aged 11 but my concerns were dismissed. However I took him back again a few weeks ago and he's off for blood tests at the hospital later this week and the GP has referred his case to the paediatric hub (& we're awaiting contact to establish the next step).
His feet haven't grown in nearly 2 years (since Aug 2023), & he's still wearing the same age 10-11 school uniform that he started Y7 in (he'll be going into Y9 in September).
He's constantly subjected to nasty comments at school about his height, and his mental health is really struggling.
He had Meningitis when he was younger and I'm concerned it's caused damage to the Pituitary gland.
I'm not really too sure about the point of this post other than to ask if anyone has any experience of dealing with child growth issues? And what's your experience been?
Thanks in advance.

My daughyer is also 13 and around second percentile or below. She has had various tests and scans and growth hormone testing all
normal! she is much smaller than her 5 sister and the same height as my 9 year old. She also is delayed startijg puberty (no signs yet) whereas my other girls started periods and 10 or 11. No idea why!

Can I ask how tall is she? X

Any news on this OP? blood tests should be done in the morning especially to check cortisol. Other hormones need special test and the blood to ne put on ice straight away. What did they show? I think a stim test is necessary if all other tests normal (check thyroid too please )

Just a quick update for those interested. DS had an appointment with a Consultant Paediatrician earlier this week. She took it all very seriously and within an hour of the appointment he had an xray of his left wrist/hand so his bone age can be assessed. He's booked in for more blood tests next week and she's making a referral to a Dietician at the hospital. He's also awaiting an MRI scan of his brain to see if there's any damage (especially to the Pituitary Gland) caused by the Meningitis he had, and a referral to Paediatric Endocrinology at another hospital is being submitted as they will need make the decision about growth hormone treatment.

Oh goodness OP so sorry that’s so slow. Thing is if he’s GH deficient he needs to start asap. Can you see a private paediatric endo and then wait for the NHS? absolutely heartbreaking

Shufflebumnessie · 06/11/2025 16:31

@Iamfree unfortunately private isn't really possible at the moment. His consultant said that if his bone age comes back as close to his actual age then she will escalate his case, if it comes back as much younger (eg 10 years) then we have a bit more of a window. She seemed to think we'd be seen quite soon so fingers crossed.

@Iamfreeplease stop pressuring the OP to go private she’s said multiple times to you that it’s not an option so just drop it.

I’m glad things are in motion now OP!

Iamfree · 10/11/2025 15:46

@pambeesleyhalperti am someone who’s gone through this so I am hoping OP is lucky and gets a STIM test asap. This is something that if it’s not done now can’t be done later. Once the growth plates are closed it’s game over.
