Migraine for over a week

My 12yr old son had his first migraine in May last year. As time has gone on they are every 2 months ish, and they last ages! Before it was 4/5 days, but the last two have been over a week. He's only been sick twice this time, and can watch tv, anything else is too much for him and he's just in bed.
We've seen a neurologist (I'll ring him tomorrow), had an mri and been prescribed sumatriptan nasal spray. He's tried propranolol, didn't work, also pitzotifen, side effects were too much.
Has anyone else suffered with migraines that last this long???
Sorry long post...

My DD had a 3 week long one a few months ago. Sadly, under 18 they don't seem to have any rescue medication if triptans don't work. For DD, she had really tight neck muscles and medics recommended heat / massage / anti-inflammatories to relax the muscles and disrupt the vicious cycle of migraine causing muscle tightness, which then made the migraine worse.

@handmademitlove 3 weeks that's awful.
It's so bad for them isn't it. I'll try the heat/massage and see if it helps.
Thank you for replying

@Phoenixfly how is he doing now?

Phoenixfly · 29/06/2025 08:25

Sorry @handmademitlove I've not been on for a few days. Thank you for asking.
He's still the same. We saw the neurologist on Thursday, and he's prescribed pizotifen again. Starting on a very low dose this time and seeing if we can build it up, so fingers crossed.

Have you thought about keeping a food diary? I am a migraine sufferer and suffered as a child. It was only as an adult that I realised eggs, chocolate and red wine were major triggers (along with stress).

Migraine buddy have an appointment where you can note your triggers, etc

I had migraines about this age, they’re so debilitating. Definitely look at triggers, I did an elimination diet. Oranges, dark chocolate and coffee are my triggers and I’m very sensitive to all of them.

As I got older, I also realised dehydration, irregular eating times would lead to a migraine. I was also told by a pain specialist to not be scared to use strong medications early eg stop a headache developing; but this is probably person dependent.
i use migraine buddy to track my migraines and have found it really useful. It has lists of different symptoms and a few I was getting but not really registering. Might be handy for a child, I certainly wasn’t able to articulate all my symptoms at that age. Hope things improve soon.

I’ve just had one that lasted 4 days and the only thing that finally got rid of it (after the usual triptans and codeine had only provided temporary relief) was an ice pack to the side of my head where the pain is. Worth a try!

Phoenixfly · 30/06/2025 06:57

So we have the cold packs, which do offer some relief. We've got quite a few so they're on a constant cycle!
Massage didn't help, but was definitely worth a try.
The prof thinks it's probably hormones, but as some of you have said, a food diary would be good as another check.
I'd never heard of migraine buddy, I'll check it out, thank you 😊

Dd started getting cluster migraines at that age. We've never really established triggers other than stress.

She did try pizotifen but felt totally spaced out on it (the second week she was better but still not brilliant) so chose not to continue.

Phoenixfly · 01/07/2025 08:56

@MargaretThursday that's such a shame it didn't work for her. One of my Dds was on it for years and it really helped.
Fingers crossed for my Ds, picking his drugs up today.
