My 9 year old never burps and is violently sick at least once a week…help!

I will try keep this as short as I can. When my now 9 year old son was a baby, I cannot remember him burp, I do remember him vomiting his milk back up all over me. As he’s got older and eats solid food he could randomly vomit around once per week (could be three days in a row or not for a fortnight but around once a week). I’m not talking a little bit in the toilet, I’m talking violently sick like projectile and splashes all over my walls and the toilet is covered as well as inside. He will then carry on with his day as normal. Before these episodes he complains of nausea, sometimes stomach pain and says he can’t breathe great. He has nausea mostly every night and the vomiting is mostly at night. Obviously I have visited gp numerous times and they do bloods (never found anything from bloods). Two days ago he started vomiting and complaining of headaches. He was admitted to hospital and he underwent a ct and then an mri of brain and face. They found nothing, redid bloods and found nothing. He isn’t losing weight, he’s growing just fine, it’s just so awful that this is his normal. I have asked to be referred to a gastro and they asked me to go to gp again and the wait is long. They’ve also given me a paed but could wait between 10-12 weeks for an appointment. Although I’m happy that he is finally being heard I also wondered if anyone else has this experience or any ideas what I should be asking for! (He isn’t celiac they did bloods for that too). Thank you 🙏

Sorry to hijack OP, but I also thought R-CPD and would love to know what treatment @Blueskies121 has had. My DD suffers and has been told the NHS doesn’t recognise the condition. She is looking at Botox privately, but I’m wary.

Coeliac does not always show in bloods. They need to actually take a look with the cameras. Please insist whilst they are looking for other causes.

Ahh thanks for that! We actually thought the had celiac when he was being tested as it just seemed to make sense! These are the things the gp does not tell you (that it’s not always found in bloods) I will be taking this info to my next appointment. Thanks so much x

Have you considered food allergy? The vomiting explosively sounds like what I experience when I have eaten food that has been cross- contaminated with my allergen. Anaphylaxis symptoms include coughing, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as the more well-known swelling and shortness of breath.

Thanks so much for this info! He never swells but I guess he has the other symptoms and everyone is different. I am going to be really firm with my go and say this has gone on for years and I’d want a diagnosis, allergen tests are a great start as that could rule out having any major testing done x

I think they’ve only recently discovered it havnt they! Imagine how uncomfortable it must be to the individual but there’s hardly any info or research into it. I hope your child finds some helpful treatment x

I couldn’t burp as a child age was often sick, I’m 46 now and have learned to burp in the last 5 years or so but I also suffer awful indigestion and have since I was a child. I get relief when I lie on my left side , probably due to how the stomach is shaped. My DH spent the first 15 years of our Marriage rubbing my back and trying to burp me after every meal . Things I’ve found helped are having a tbsp of vinegar in a glass of water 15 minutes before every meal to increase stomach acid for efficient digestion (sometimes I have half a grapefruit instead). Doing an invisible hula hoop motion after eating with my arms in the air and ommeprazole also helps. I used to chug gaviscon by the kite every week but thankfully that’s eased off since I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. This is going to SUVs stupid but does he ever “forget” to breathe? I was terrible for it, holding my breath when I was at the good point of a book, watching a v movie etc and it always made it much worse.

Any mouth sores or swollen lips? Could be worth excluding Crohn's disease via endoscopy. It's more common in the intestine but can occur anywhere from mouth to anus. My daughter has it from stomach downwards and one symptom of the stomach inflammation was regular random vomiting (and a chronic cough).

Oh my goodness that sounds like it was a hard time for you all! This is something I would have never even considered, and this is the reason to my post because I need to know others experiences. Thanks so much for this and I hope your daughter is doing ok x

I’m so sorry you experienced this for so long and it sounds like you have an amazing person helping you and supporting you! Actually yes, I remember on so many occasions I’ve had to say breathe, you’re not breathing in a normal way you’re holding your breath. Totally didn’t think it was related in any way as it’s not always just sometimes, but maybe it could be! Thank you x

Not sure about the no burping, but my son had a very similar vomiting thing from when he was a baby.
We visited an osteopath and they advised he had an overactive liver, which was making his nauseous and causing the vomiting. We did a session with him every 6-8 months which greatly reduced the symptoms, and he eventually grew out of it.

Does he snore at all? If so It could be worth checking for sleep aides with the gp. Sleep apnea isn’t just something over weight people have, central apnea can happen in anybody at any age and often goes undiagnosed for years. It can make reflux and gerd suctions much worse

My DS was sick regularly with a cows milk intolerance. I weened my DC onto goats milk as I’d had been cows milk intolerant as a child and it felt more natural to me, but I didn’t see any signs of any issues with cows milk and so they had it at nursery in cereal. He’d be sick often at the weekend - I think the cows milk reaction had built up over a week at nursery. He was also very sick every time we went away - when he was having cows milk to drink of course. Only put two and two together when my sister asked what he’d had different to usual, as he puked all over her floor…

My cows milk intolerance showed itself as excessive mucus. It wasn’t obvious with DS, but I think the cows milk caused the mucus which caused the vomiting. He also tends to vomit if he has a thick cold. He’s ok with milk in food, except some ice creams, and I never let him have cream.

It doesn’t sound exactly the same as your child’s case but I think it’s always worth flagging just in case, so simple a solution.

the same as your child mine always vomits whether he has a cold or virus, whatever illness he has at the time it just makes the vomiting worse. My mum often says everything he gets it goes to his stomach. I’m glad you have added your experience, as he does drink cows milk to this day he has around a half pint to a pint a day. Although he doesn’t vomit straight after the milk, your reply has made me think (where you have added the intolerance may have built up throughout the week) I’m going to have a look at what contains milk and maybe cut it out see if that helps. I’m glad you found out what the reason was with your child x
