15mo old won’t stop coughing at night

Hi everyone, my DS has just gotten over a cold about a week ago, fine in the day, the odd cough here and there, but through the night it is constant. It doesn’t seem to be distressing him but it’s not nice hearing him cough so much. Is it worth taking him to the GP or will they just tell me it’s a post viral cough? and is there anything I can do to help him and is it ok to just let him cough as it’s not waking him up or distressing him

Take him to get checked out, give yourself some reassurance.

DS recently has similar, it was a bit mucus that would drip down the back of his throat and irritate it to cough, nothing serious. Only happened when lay down at night. This may be similar 🥰

Sounds like nasal drip, I found keeping nose as clear as possible at night did help, calpol plug ins and Olbus oil. Happens after every cold here!

I would give a dose of Piriton of it's age appropriate to see if that helps but definitely get him checked out .

Secret vaping?

Spudtacular1000 · 20/06/2025 23:47

Humidifier is your best friend too! Echo calpol plugin too.

Plenty of fluids and if it doesn’t clear up in a week or so then go to the GP

Elevate the head end of the bed. Lots of water instead of milk before bed? Check there are no other symptoms ?

Secret vaping?

How is a fifteen month old toddler going to be secretly vaping?

Are you being intentional stupid? I mean an adult in the house

I second this, I’ve found the olbas oil patches are great too. You stick them on the child’s back or back of the pillow and it really helps.

I'd say back to GP, non urgent appt. A nighttime cough is symptomatic of asthma inane young children
My own DS1, now adult, nighttime cough was only symptom, we only realised something wasnt quite right when DS2 was a toddler & running rings around big brother. He was started on a salbutamol inhaler butsuddenly a crisis point & he was hospitalised so diagnosed very quickly. He never had as a child & hasn't since had any audilble wheeziness but was diagnosed very quickly as GP heard wheeze when examined & inhalers quickly responded to.
Always as a mum trust your instincts if you think something isn't right.

Clearly not as stupid to the person who leaped to the thought of secret vaping in a 15 month old.

My 10 month old was the same, I put it down to not drinking through the night and so his throat etc were dry, causing him to cough more. He also had a cold and the cough lingered a while but didn't really seem to bother him. I didn't go to the doctors. The cough lasted probably 5 days after the cold and he's absolutely fine now
