Fecal Disimpaction

Hi there! I hope our fellow parent can assist me with my question. My 3 year old little boy is on ‘fecal disimpaction’ since this monday, we are currently on day 5, where 6 sachets are required ( Movicol Sachets )

. He had it just after school time. He went to the toilet about 15 mins ago, and produced this poo! I’m not too sure on whether this means it’s a good stage and we’re completing the disimpaction? Or it is simply seepage going around the impacted stool. Thankyou😊

(apologies the photo is not too great!! )

Google The Poo Nurses video and watch it right to the very end. It explains everything you need to know about fecal impaction, explains the Bristol stool chart and provides you with a copy.
The dismpaction process is long and requires dedication and patience. It is well worth the short time it takes to watch the video while you wait for your photo to be checked by MN moderators.

I always tell parents that you only abandon the disimpaction regime early if you have 3 days of multiple episodes of large quantities of liquid stool. I'm afraid I can't see your picture. Have you looked on www.eric.org.uk ?

Unfortunately with the disimpaction regime you need to wait until there have been a few 💩 that are liquid. If your child is constipated, they may well have a poo which is liquid but is actually just overflow.

With the disimpaction regime they need to pass huge amounts of poo, and the final few will be liquid.

It's then really important to move straight onto the maintenance doses. Don't be tempted to skip it for a few days.

My DD has had to follow it about 3 times unfortunately. You may find that even once disimpacted, their bowels aren't really working properly. IME it takes about 6 months for their bowels to recover fully.

Eric is a really helpful website.

Oh, and especially in this weather, keep up the water! Lots and lots of water, with dioralyte if needed.

I'm amazed your kid was able to go to school. We've had to keep DD off during the later stages of the regime, usually she's quite uncomfortable.

Ah that's good! My DD had weeks off in year 1 due to this.

I hope your son returns to normal bowel function soon!
