Teenager sleeping folded over

My teenager often wakes up with his head on his feet, folded forwards. He has done this on and off since he was quite young but now wakes up most days in this awkward position. He must sit up in his sleep and put his head forward on to his legs.

Not sure what we can do about it. Has anyone else heard of this?

Why would you need to do anything about it? If he gets uncomfortable he’ll wake and go back to a normal position.

Gosh. That’s some flexibility. Do they wake feeling uncomfortable? If not I personally wouldn’t worry if it’s something they’ve always done.

Is your teenager hypermobile?

throwawaynametoday · 18/06/2025 07:28

Not your question but I am marvelling at his flexibility. Does he have hypermobility?

It does seem an odd sleeping position. Does he seem well rested? What does he think?

DuaNinja · 18/06/2025 08:04

No, he feels awful when he wakes up like that but he must sleep very heavily as he doesn't wake up or remember doing it.

Hmm tricky then.

Weighted blanket? Might help him to subconsciously stay lying down when he is asleep?

Different pillows/mattress? Perhaps he isn't as comfortable as he could be and it is causing him to shift positions in his sleep?

DuaNinja · 18/06/2025 08:16

Maybe a weighted blanket might help.

He had a new mattress a few years ago.

Its so strange, and not something anyone else seems to do!

I’ve caught my teen daughter doing almost this a few times; sleeping sitting up hunched forward. It freaked me out! She doesn’t remember it at all, was in a really really deep sleep.

My son does this sometimes! I often go in his bedroom and he’s asleep facing the wrong way in bed or in odd positions - he does it more when he’s over tired. I try and create a nest around him with pillows but I figure he's also old enough to come up with his own solutions, and as I’m not there when he goes to sleep the nest often gets manouvered to how he finds it comfy. I don’t stress about it, but it can be alarming when I go into wake him up and find him in weird positions!
