Circumcission for phimosis recovery time?

My eldest has surgery on Friday for phimosis, it wasn't due to be until the end of the summer holidays, but has now been moved forward. He has a soccer camp in 2 weeks' time and wants to still go. I am unsure if he will be received in time.

It varies but that’s a bit close. All depends really. How old is he?

BonnieSide · 16/06/2025 21:49

Im thinking that too its so close! He is 10

My son had his surgery about 18 months ago. It took him 2-3 weeks to fully recover. He was eight at the time and didn't want to wear any underwear for the first week or so. They are really sensitive for weeks

Can I ask how you got your GP to take phimosis seriously? My DS is 8 and the GP keeps insisting it will just resolve on its own.

BonnieSide · 16/06/2025 22:21

@VoltaireMittyDream , really sorry to hear! My DS has had 12 UTIs in 12 months, which is why they referred us to a specialist as to why he got them. I could have told them why, but they don't listen. Does your son get infections with it too?

Thanks for replying, @BonnieSide . My DS has had balanitis once but never a uti.

BonnieSide · 18/06/2025 18:07

His surgery has been moved to tomorrow now. We are worried about how difficult it’ll be for him

Surgery went well. He’s home really tired and in lots of pain. Really sensitive as expected

Bless him I hope he can start the road to recovery now

One of mine had it and bounced back very quickly. Kept him off school for 2 weeks though as was worried he would get pushed about. My son had constant infections, couldn't urinate properly and had BXO.

Ruby41 · 22/06/2025 17:40

Bless him, thank you, he is doing a bit better! The pain hasn't been so bad, he is very sensitive as expected, though. He did manage to tip his toes in the paddling pool today and sit on a stool to avoid getting the wound wet

How did DS get on? My DS has a surgery on 18th September getting very anxious. How was he before and after surgery? Any issues after?

My son aged 10 had this done over the summer. He was extremely sensitive and in pain for a solid 7-10 days. Couldn’t handle any material touching it. We ended up making a sort of tent bed so even his duvet wouldn’t brush against him. I was quite surprised at how much pain he was in. Also be prepared for how awful it looks after - black, some seeping, massively swollen, very bruised etc My son was quite unprepared for the aftermath, despite lots of chats in the lead up to what it might be like for a little while after. BUT he is absolutely back to normal and happy he had the surgery 😊

ThisIsPickel · 07/09/2025 20:11

Oh my got this sounds horrendous. I am so scared for him for the pain the consulatnant told us last week he would not be in much pain but I didnt really think this was true. Did they give you/him much medicines for the pain. My DS is 11 but has his birthday a few days before so will be 12 by the time surgery comes round. I did buy him briefs thinking maybe it might support everything but ill good at getting something to build a tent like you did. What did you use? Oh god this scares me so much for him. Ds deffo needs the surgery we cant go on like this

Ruby41 · 07/09/2025 20:38

@ThisIsPickel , the first 7 to 10 days are horrible for their little soles. Any sort of contact with clothing or anything is not comfortable. As @DarkestBeforeDawn, we did similar by making a little box to fit in his underwear to avoid contact with the fabric and didn't really venture outside. If we did, we would go to McDonald's, where he didn't get out of the car, but mainly for his mental health and a change of view. While it can feel like you are alone, you are definitely not, as many have been before and after you and your DS. Best of luck

My son had his surgery yday the pain is so bad he cant bare anything touching him. The pain meds are making him sleep he wakes about an hour before next lot are due for some food and a wee

ThisIsPickel · 10/09/2025 21:16

This is scary I woudl say bring him back to be checked out

WinterRach · 11/09/2025 20:07

My son had his surgery on Monday, and he has been horribly sore. He is so tender, and anything touching him has been so sensitive, I think it will take a few weeks for things to settle down

ThisIsPickel · 11/09/2025 20:10

I have been doing a lot of research, and it says they can be really sensitive as thier glad hasnt ever been exposed

Paula92 · 17/09/2025 23:21

My DS had his done at the start of the summer holidays. He is 11 and had been on a waiting list for months, but they couldn't tell us when he might eventually get it done, so we went private in the end. We had heard from different people that doing it before puberty would give him an easier time healing, which we were very happy about because the first couple of weeks were rough enough for him as it was!
He was in a lot of pain at the start and everything was so sensitive down there, so we also made him a little cover to stop the bedding from touching him down there (we used an old washing basket that we cut the sides off!). He was still walking gingerly in the latter half of the holidays, but by the time he was back at school he had healed up nicely and said he felt fine.
His two best friends were so lovely to him too. He had been quite worried about telling them, but bless them, they came over every day and sat in his room playing computer games to keep him company. He may not have had a pleasant summer, but my DS is very happy that it is over with and his problems have seemingly been solved.
Good luck to all the boys still waiting to be done. I hope their recovery isn't too bad and they can put their issues behind them after it is done.
