Hi all,

Took my 9m old daughter to the doctors today with some concern for a few things but most notably late rolling, not sitting upright unaided and not crawling.
She has always suffered with reflux and discomfort, we've been through many different milks and medications and finally got prescribed amino-acid formula. Very little help from GP's (It's reflux, deal with it🙄)
Anyway, after months of battling and asking for help, I finally discover that she has a hernia. I'm so upset but relieved that it's been discovered.

My question is, has anyone had a baby with a hernia that has delayed their physical development? My GP thinks that it could be playing a part in the delay but now it's just a waiting game for the referral to go through.

That’s pretty poor doctoring OP. I’m sure someone will be along better informed than I am but pleased you’ve finally got somewhere and your baby can start getting the help she needs.

I know, I'm trying not to blame myself for not pushing even harder than I did. We moved surgeries and this was AJ's first visit there, and he found it in less than 5 mins.

It's honestly pretty likely that it's the reflux that is hitting the motor milestones, as that is incredibly common. Clearly the hernia needs sorting though.

I just feel so bad for her, she is honestly the happiest little thing but all her friends at sensory group are crawling and she just sits there hunched over watching them and waving😔

My DD developed a hernia when she was a very young baby (can't remember how young). It was probably caused by her angry crying (she is still feisty aged 21). The GP said the hernia would probably go away on its own before she was two, and it did. Your baby's hernia might be caused by her crying due to reflux pain? Chances are it will go away on its own.
The late development could be one of a million things and I think you should ask the health visitor at what point should you start to seek advice. All babies do things at different ages depending on their temperament, muscle tone, how physical/active you are (heredary). My DS was not sitting at 8 months but was by 10 months, crawled and walked later too, but is fine. Not sporty, not an active type, but totally 'normal'. Enjoy your baby and stop comparing her to others.

Thank you. We're aware that all babies develop at different rates but as her father works with young children, and I used to, it's easy to notice an area in which she is struggling. We reached the point that everything have been doing seems to be having no effect in helping her, hence the early check up. We both know that if there was an issue then early intervention is essential. The GP seemed to think that we had valid concerns as she is only struggling with her gross motor skills, not her fine motor skills, in that area she is doing wonderfully.
