Child being assessed to see if they're on the spectrum

My son is in the process of getting assessed to see if hes on the spectrum. I think he may have some form of autism, or adhd due to a few factors (doesn't seem to grasp concept of danger, very easily distracted, seems to zone out sometimes, gets upset if he can't do something (not in a horrible way but I.e. hes trying to read a book and struggles with words, he gets very upset and thinks he can't do it)), and his father has Aspergers.

The school has had him observed and made the referral but that can take up to 4 years to be seen etc. And I'd rather get him a diagnosis soon rather than later and I can then get help and support put in place. However I've also heard that you can self refer and get seen quicker (can't remember the name of it).

For those that have done either route- what are the pros and cons of them. Thanks.

Go to your GP and ask for a referral to a private provider for an autism/adhd assessment. You can do some research online on which provide nhs referrals. We went with clinical partners. It was about 8 months wait rather than 8 years with the nhs!

It's called 'right to choose' if you want to Google it
