Re-occurring Bronchiolitis

Hi,

My son is 8 months old in a few days, we have just got back from hospital after another stay for Bronchiolitis. This is the 3rd time he has had it and the 2nd hospital stay.

He is now under a respiratory consultant as since the first episode when he was 3 months, he has sounded quite noisy with a slight wheeze.

I just feel so worried about him. Has anyone else experienced this?

thank you

Yes we had similar, several a&e trips and stays overnight. We cut dairy out of our dc's diet (which was my diet as was breastfeeding) and things got a lot better.

we had similar.

allergies played a part and when we sorted that things improved a bit. The biggest difference came when we moved from a high pollution area to a clean air area (by the beach). Obviously he still picks up bugs and is ill but we went from regular hospitalisations with preventative inhalers and other medication to nothing! Best thing we ever did.

I always warn parents that if their baby has had bronchiolitis once, they're more likely to get it again, especially if they were young the first time. Luckily for quite a lot they get it milder the subsequent times, but there's no guarantee of that.

My daughter had it at 6 months, I spent the following four winters in hospital for a week with her. She then seemed to grow out of it but does now use an inhaler for wheezing during sport on a cold day.

Yes we have. My son was finally diagnosed with airway malacia and dysphagia (unsafe swallow) at 23 months. He had it all his life. Not saying that's what your son has but it's something the respiratory consultant will probably look at.

Before he had that diagnosis, he trialed asthma inhalers. Has your son?

Does he cough or gag when he eats or drinks?

Thanks for all your replies. Since posting, we ended up being admitted again twice. The drs finally did a chest x ray and it turns out he’s got influenza (tested positive on a swab), croup and Bronchiolitis. No wonder he was so poorly. We are home now and he is better in himself and feeding, he just sounds absolutely awful when breathing.

Thanks ☺️

Fingers crossed he feels better soon. We had several winters like this. For me I have been Molly coddling her too much and keeping her inside. When I took her out a lot more and she had more fresh it seemed to alleviate things. Also we used to steam the bathroom with a menthol bubble bath. She was given an inhaler and has grown out of it thankfully. Hope it all works out and your DS grows out of it too if he has it recurring. Good luck I know it can be horribly worrying.

You poor thing! My little one was hospitalised for it at around 7 months old for a week, really struggled on high flow oxygen and was really quite poorly.
He’s had it twice more since then, but each time much milder than the previous, and no long hospital stays (just 12 hours for observation one time).
We were told that the vast majority of kids don’t get hospitalised for bronchiolitis and just because he reacted badly before, isn’t an indication of how bad he will get it again, and that most kids grow out of it by the time they’re 1 years old as all their airways etc are much bigger.
Just wanted to share as these little bits of information have really helped my anxiety every time he gets a cough/cold since the first hospital stay.
im sure the drs told you, but make sure the mattress is inclined slightly, water vapour in the room and saline spray up the nostrils will all help while he’s recovering x

@Poonu

thanks so much for your reply. I’m glad your daughter was fine 😊

@ttccd21

thats exactly what happened to DS in February. He was in HDU for 4 days on high flow and tube feb.

did your DS sound noisy after he had recovered? DS hasn’t sounded right since he had it in feb but they have assured me it’s normal for it to take ages to get back to normal.

its been such a long way, in and out of A&E 😴

Ds had it on and off from 4 weeks old until he was 10 months.
Many hospital stays over that time.
Unsure of future issues with his lungs.
At 18 he joined the army having been fighting fit for years... A total buff 24 year old now!!. At the time I couldn't have imagined such a thing!!

It’s so scary isn’t it, DS is 13 months now and I still feel a bit traumatised by it all!

I’d say it took a good 2-3 months to clear his chest completely, although it was over winter so hard to tell where one bug ended and a new one began 😩 he’s definitely no where near as wheazy now though even when he does have a tickly cough!

really hope he’s on the mend soon and the consultant puts your mind at rest x

My dd had it first at 3 months old also, it took a good few months for her breathing to sound normal and it seemed that as soon as it did she would get another bout of it. She had a few good months then caught it again last winter but we managed at home with inhalers this time. She is nearly two now and had been okay since April so I’m hoping this is her growing out of it.
Of your little one is in nursery I would say to expect many more occurrences.
