Phimosis - Circumcision

Hi all, I have a little boys who's 3 years old who's had a few infections on his penis. I noticed when he was urinating that his penis was blowing up like a ballon and then releasing his urine. Last time we went to the GP I showed him a video of what it looked like and he was referred to urology. We had 1 appointment I explained how it ballooned up when urinating, he had a look and said he has quite sever phimosis and that he should be able to pull his foreskin back slightly to even just see the tip but you cant at all. He said he needs full circumcision and it is booked in for this month.
Is this a bit drastic? Does he need the surgery so soon? I am very anxious about this and would rather him not but obviously if really needs then thats fine, but I have read that sometimes this can be normal in toddler age.

Anyone help or advice please?

We have our surgery date - 4th August. Lots of time to stress & worry about it! Hope your boy is doing well & is recovered. I'm glad the op is in the school holidays so hopefully he'll be OK returning to school early September.

Hey, absolutely nothing to worry about at all!
Everything went well he is well recovered, hes just getting used to it been 'different'. Honestly dont stress i did and it did me absolutely no favours, there was no need for it it was pretty straight forward. He had one tough day in the whole of recovery and that was it.
Good Luck 💖

Jumping on the post for some advice on recovery - DS aged 7 likely has BXO and will need surgery (creams are not working).

How long did your children stay away from school? How long did pain that required painkillers last? With regards to heightened sensitivity, are there any tips? Is this the kind of sensitivity that stops any day to day activities?

Thank you.

I am really upset this is happening to DS, and want to make the recovery process as manageable as possible.

My husband was circumcised as a toddler for this reason; sometimes it’s just necessary. He doesn’t remember anything about it and there’s no lasting effect.

Same. DH was circumcised as a baby. Doesn’t seem to have affected his life in anyway.

Honestly it's not half as bad as you think it will be. My little boy was 3 so prob a little different as he wore nappies at the time which was slightly uncomfortable as it touched it tried to have him naked as much as possible which helped. I gave him calpol for 3 4 days and then he was okay, they say just to take it easy for few days and then back to normal obviously been careful. He was back to school nursery following week.

No tips for sensitivity but my son is totally used to it now, can wee much more normal and has had no issues since having it done. We just spending the week after relaxing at home.

My son had his surgery on 4th August this year so over the school summer holidays. I asked OP exactly the same & she was completley right! It wasnt as bad as we were expecting. He was certainly very uncomfortable for the first 2 days. His most comfortable position was on a recliner chair. He travelled home sat on a rubber ring in the car. We brought thin football shorts which were most comfortable for him which was all he wore for 3 weeks after. He was very sensitive to even the wind outside blowing against him & even water from a light shower. Vaseline was great, it stopped clothing/ bedding sticking although we had a couple of occasions where his shorts stuck & he became upset. The healing took at least 4 weeks but he was happy to wee without pain & it was definately the best decision for him. We spent a couple of weeks taking things steady after, short walks, films, arts & crafts, board games.

Thank you <3 Hope he is all well now and it is all a distant memory. Planning around school holidays may not be an option for us, from your experience how long would you think it would be off school during term time? 1 week? 2 weeks? I know it is nothing in the long run, but a first time for me to deal with a long-ish absence… Obvs no PE!

really appreciate you sharing, thank you xx

He's doing really well now thank you. He has a follow up appointment on 13th November to check in. Apparantly after a circumcision there is a risk of the 'wee hole' going smaller & a risk of further surgery for that (I'm hoping he won't need it & he'll be discharged after his follow up appointment). I would say he will need at least 2 weeks off school. Not because he'll be in pain but because he'll still be healing & getting used to new sensitivity. He'll be fine though & will feel so much better. Not long after surgery I walked into the bathroom because I thought he'd left the tap running. It was him having a wee! He'd struggled so much before it used to trickle out so it was a joy to hear how 'easy' it was now to have a wee!
