Infected ingrown tonail

Ds2 has an infected in growing toenail. Several courses of antibiotics and soaking foot in salt water haven't shifted it so saw the consultant in December. She said stop the salt water and antibiotics, just keep it dry and let air get to it. She put him on the semi urgent list to have toenail removed which should be done in 2-3 months. I've chased this up twice now. Today I was told they don't know when it will be done, could be a month, could be 3. Toe is still red, swollen and weeping as it has been since October last year. Ds2 says he isn't in any pain but he has autism so doesn't always feel pain. I don't know what to do.

My ds had an infected in growing toenail and he said it wasn't painful so it is possible. He had a slice of it removed at tge GPs. I did hear later that chiropodists are better at doing this so I don't know if it's an option for you to pay for this privately. After the partial removal it was very painful the gp said he could go back to school tge next day but he was off for 3 days and couldn't wear proper shoes or walk well for a couple of weeks from memory.

How old is your DS?
Is this a hospital referal?

A Podiatrist (NHS but there's a wait) or Private could perform a nail avulsion/partial nail avulsion under a local if your DS is able to have the injection and his health doesn;t contra-indicate it .

You'd need to check if a Private Podiatrist offers this service , not all do .
Poor DS, it's a painful condition

Some really good treatments we have found for ingrown nails - fucidin cream if it’s infected, and then Vicks weirdly is also good if it’s fungal. And there is a nail laquer a doctor can prescribe too which has worked. We also saw a podiatrist who filed everything down which was really helpful too. Hope it all clears up!!

DD had similar, just took her to a lovely chiropodist/podiatrist. £180 and 45 mins later, half the nail removed with local anesthetic.

Thank you. Ds is 17 and has autism. He is meant to be having it done under general anaesthetic at the hospital.

Ah, yeah the 1st injection was a horrific tbh. And DD was 12.

2-3 months of a long time to wait if you are in pain. I'd definitely try do some digging around private hospitals.

Thank you. The surgeon said that they always do this under general anaesthetic for children because it's extremely painful.

Ds had strong oral antibiotics before and his infection improved a bit but then came back with a vengeance when the antibiotics had finished.
