Reaction to Men. B / MMR, anyone else?

Hi there,

My son had the MMR and Men B vaccine on Monday. He complained of it being sore and ouchy on Monday evening but nothing out of the ordinary. Tuesday morning he seemed okay, my mum minds him and sent me videos of him walking around playing as usual. I lifted him from his nap on Tuesday afternoon as usual. He became absolutely hysterical, was unable to weight bear at all and lay on the couch for the evening, screaming if his leg was moved at all. He was completely unable to walk or stand.

I called my GP who said in the absence of a temp he was on balance probably fine but to go to A&E if I had any concerns. I was increasingly concerned as he was at times inconsolable. DH is abroad so I had to wait for my mum to come to mind older DS so I could take him to A&E. As I was finishing packing a bag for hospital he began to bum shuffle around. And eventually was able to weight bear. We decided not to go to A&E on this basis. By morning he was absolutely fine. The whole episode lasted 5 hours.

I have a GP appointment to get him checked over but just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar? The practice nurse said this was highly unusual. I agree. Just to add he categorically did not have any injury or temp

We've had vaccine reactions to the MMR in our family but not like you describe.

It sounds like the site of the injection was very, very painful. I hope he continues to be okay.

It was very strange, like it was his hip rather than his leg (injection site) that was the source of the pain. My older son had transient synovitis in the past and it was similar to that. But the pain wasn’t well controlled with Nurofen and Calpol . But then quite suddenly it resolved.

So, remember that it’s entirely possible that the hip pain was totally unrelated to the vaccine - maybe he is also going through transient synovitis.
Or it could be vaguely related - like the injection site was a little bit sore so he slept in an unusual position or was walking in an unusual way which caused injury.
I wouldn’t assume it was caused by the vaccine and I wouldn’t assume the problem has completely resolved and would be on the look out for limping/ avoiding using one leg/ sitting or lying in usual positions etc.

We are watching him very carefully for any signs of discomfort or change in his movements but none so far. I understand it could have been incidental. My own experience with TS is it coming on shortly after or during a viral infection and he has had no such illness in weeks. It is very strange indeed

My eldest had TS that we couldn’t link to a viral illness (doesn’t mean that one wasn’t involved, just that we hadn’t noticed symptoms viral shortly before the TS happened) but they did fall hard in an odd position a week beforehand. Wikipedia suggests it’s sometimes linked to a viral illness, sometimes to trauma but often there’s no obvious cause.

Strawberriesforever · 29/05/2025 15:38

You can always report this kind of thing to the vaccine side effects database - then statisticians can look at the incidence of reported illness/ side effects following vaccination and see if the rate is higher soon after vaccination or not. If you’re in the UK you use the yellow card reporting site.

Thank you I will do this

After a vaccine a couple of winters ago my mum woke up the next day unable to move her arm. She got checked out and they put it down to the vaccine and to keep an eye on it, within a day or two she was back to normal. She did say she felt that arm tense up as the needle went in so it's been put down to muscle not being particularly happy to have something sharp and pointy jabbed in it.

I don’t know anything about TS (never heard of it before) but the MMR is a live vaccine so it could be connected in that sense?

yes the practice nurse who was kind but sceptical thinks it maybe have been connected to MMR but it was on the Men B leg. TS is apparently very common. DS was firstly investigated for leukaemia then septic arthritis and then TS was the final diagnosis. He was very unwell with respiratory infection and HFM and one or other of the viruses had travelled to his hip joint they believe.

Both of my DC had adverse reactions as babies to vaccines. For DS the GP surgery put him an a revised vaccine schedule, and ordered in separate vaccines which he had 1 at a time.

DD's reaction was worse, she was put on the same vaccine schedule as DS, but had them at the hospital as a day case so she could be monitored.

It's been put down to them both having the MTHFR gene mutation (which I had tested privately).

Poohbear333 · 30/05/2025 20:26

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope everything is well. Please read “in sickness and in wealth” by Ellie grey which provides valuable education on vaccines and things we are not told about. Even if you report this, these stats are hidden. I will never give my child a jab again.

pollymere · 30/05/2025 21:51

Quite a few of my COVID jab sites have become infected with Strep. It's not the vaccine but a bacterial skin reaction.

It could also be that he's allergic to something in the vaccines or the needle. Some aren't suitable for egg allergies as an example.

I got a really bad "measles" type reaction to the MMR but it was a few weeks in and is a known reaction to the jab. You don't get a fever but you get some measle symptoms.

Thanks so much for your reply. I honestly feel a bit better knowing DS is not the only one. Do you mind if I ask did this happen for all your DC vaccinations or just that particular set? We are due another round in a month and I am naturally very anxious

The MMR and Men B are usually only given together at 12 months. Then nothing is due until preschool booster (this will be changing).
What vaccines are you due again in one month??

Im in Ireland, perhaps our schedule is slightly different. DS is late getting his vaccines because of some health issues he just had his 12m vaccines at 19m and he will have his 13m vaccines at 20m. The next round is chicken pox, Men C and PCV.
